IMHO those events stopped being a debate "Debate is a process that involves formal discourse, discussion, and oral addresses on a particular topic or collection of topics, often with a moderator and an audience. In a debate, arguments are put forward for common opposing viewpoints." at least 5 presidential elections ago.
I agree @Mark. These events, often poorly moderated, bear no resemblance to academic debate. Never have. JFK & Nixon was pretty good though as I remember.
My favorite was the 1992 VP debate between Admiral James Stockdale and Dan Quayle. A+ for honesty / candor to Stockdale.
