How Artemis SLS stacks up against the Saturn V moon rocket
Artemis’s initial test flight to the moon is scheduled for launch Monday, August 30 shortly after 8:30 AM from Cape Canaveral, Fla. The flight willy carry no crew. Splashdown in the Pacific should occur about 6 weeks later. First crewed mission to the moon isn’t planned until 2024. This mission will not land on the surface of the moon, but will test various orbits / maneuvers in the moon’s vicinity.
Listening to NASA news conference at this moment. Sounds like human error today. Somebody “over-pressurized” the SOB during fueling leading to a big hydrogen leak.
No, just more Boeing. How sad... we all remember when they were a first-rate outfit... something that we were all proud of. Another fine job by the folks that BBF is so enamored of. Boy, those guys sure earn their big fat pensions. And of course there's no sucking at the taxpayer's teat there. Right.
Methiinks they need Elon Musk to review WTF they’re doing …
Don’t care for the practice of appointing political favorites to head NASA. I believe Trump began the process. Nelson was one of the last civilians allowed to take a “celebrity” ride on the Shuttle before they realized how unsafe it was. Well, I’ve ridden on planes. Doesn’t qualify me to run the FAA.
As I see the present situation, it's not NASA, as such- unlike previous programs, NASA has turned over the equipment design and construction of major projects to Boeing and other "civilian" contractors. NASA is responsible for setting the goals, major specifications, and general oversight, but in the Artemis project Boeing is responsible for the design, functioning and reliability of the actual equipment. Design issues? Manufacturing issues? Engineering issues?
Maybe after the Max fiasco they reassigned the Max guys to Artemis.
Thanks OJ. I hadn’t realized the extent to which Boeing was involved in this. Geez. You can’t even trust them to build a safe passenger plane on their own ….
Wonder if these flawed 2 launch attempts will result in Boeing CEOs having to cough up some of their own money or take a pay cut? Damn expensive having to roll that baby back inside and take it apart.
The leak was in the “quick disconnect” fitting used in fueling it.. That’s a lot of liquid hydrogen to be sitting atop. Many different fuels are used in rocket engines today along with an oxygen oxidizer in varying proportions. Musk uses the more conventional kerosine in the current fleet from my understanding. but is working on liquid methane because it would be possible to manufacture that on Mars. ISTM Bezos is using methane or something like it, Little, if any, visible flame from his vehicles on launch.
Curious if von Braun‘s Saturn V encountered as many delays as this thing.

Complicated stuff for sure.

Wouldn't that be "some of the money that they sucked from the taxpayer's teat"?
