FYI:(The Linkster is very familiar with grief and loss. My oldest son was only four years old when he was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. He slowly withered away and died at fourteen..)

When Stephen Colbert was ten years old, he lost his father and two of his brothers in a plane crash. He spoke about it recently with Anderson Cooper.

Cooper said “You told an interviewer that you have learned to, in your words, ‘Love the thing that I most wish had not happened.'”

I've found there's nothing worse than loss. I wish those who are gone could know how much they are missed -- that might help a little. I can't imagine losing a young child but hope there are some good memories.

@Ted: my condolences, also. I join others here in their expressions of support. While we did not lose our oldest daughter, she is still our charge at 48 due to the consequences of what at 5 years of age was labeled a "learning disability." From our experience, such a diagnosis is hardly benign; it means a life-long inability to live an independent, productive existence.
