Social Security Benefits Calculation Tools

A few resources for those in the planning stages of retirement:
I noticed that most people don't understand their Social Security benefits very well. The online tools at SSA.gov are excellent, but I felt lacking in a few places. In particular, I felt that by simply spitting out a final number, the results failed to educate the user as to how the program works. I thought it would be useful to contribute a tool that helped folks to understand their own Social Security benefit and how it will help them in the future.

Calculator for SS:
The Social Security Administration now has a calculator that lets you estimate your retirement benefit by accessing your actual earnings record through a secure interface. If you are estimating a normal retirement benefit, then you may want to try using the Retirement Estimator first, because it is easier to use than the Detailed Calculator and does not require you to enter your earnings record.

  • Doesn’t a person’s annual statement from Social Security tell you exactly what to expect based on your actual earning history?
  • @Tarwheel I don't believe so ,unless things have changed. I remember going to local ss office & getting a print out a number of years ago.

.....Unless one has worked at jobs which SSA claims are "uncovered" --- i.e, jobs worked in which employer did not pay-in. And so, the bureaucracy assumes you did not pay-in, either. I had to go in person and straighten them out, before beginning to collect. Already documented on an older thread.
