Trump lawyers, citing shutdown, ask court for delay in emoluments case

edited December 2018 in Off-Topic
Perhaps there is method lurking behind the apparent madness.....Will the government remain shut down for the next two years?! image (It seems to me that Management By CHAOS may continue to periodically impact market performance for the foreseeable future.....)

  • @MFO Members: Much to do about nothing ! The shutdown has limited 17 percent of spending, amounting to $626 billion. This means 83 percent of projected 2014 spending of $3.6 trillion, amounting to $2.9 trillion, is unaffected and is continuing uninterrupted. Even if Congress is unable to agree on a spending bill, the government is still functioning, and many Americans who are dependent on various federal programs continue to receive funds.

Its my sense this shutdown does actually amount to "something" even when viewed in isolation from other actions taken our duly elected President...Here is a list of agencies that are currently shuttered (other agencies are also impacted and pay checks will at minimum be delayed for an estimated 800,000 federal workers).....

    Department closures

Nine federal departments will be shuttered as the government shuts down this weekend. They are:

    Department of the Treasury
    Department of Agriculture
    Homeland Security Department
    Department of the Interior
    Department of State
Department of Housing and Urban Development
    Department of Transportation
    Department of Commerce
    Department of Justice

  • @Ted - "Much to do about nothing!" Tell that to all the government employees doing without their pay checks while either continuing to work or laid off.

And you left out the most important part:
"This figure assumes that the government pays amounts due on appropriations obligated before the shutdown ($512 billion), spends $225 billion on exempted military and civilian personnel, pays entitlement benefits for those found eligible before the shutdown (about $2 trillion), and pays interest costs when due ($237 billion). This is about 83 percent of projected 2014 spending of $3.6 trillion."

    See that third word "assumes"?
  • "Much ADO About Nothing" is correct. Sorry: grammar, syntax, spelling and English usage police here.

    From the article:

"Lawyers for President Donald Trump are invoking the government shutdown to seek a delay in a court case over claims that Trump is illegally profiting from business his Washington hotel does with foreign countries."

Let's see now. Trump shuts down the government, then uses that as an excuse to request delay in one of the many lawsuits against him?

Reminds me of the guy who murdered his parents and then asked for leniency on the grounds that he was an orphan.

  • Out here the Highway Patrol makes you try to say "emoluments" if they suspect that you've been drinking. :)
