"The Trump administration has halted an independent scientific study of offshore oil inspections by the federal safety agency created after the 2010 spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
"The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine was told to cease review of the inspection program conducted by the federal Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement. Established following the massive BP spill, the bureau was assigned the role of improving offshore safety inspections and federal oversight.
The order marks the second time in four months that the Trump administration has halted a study by the National Academies.
There appears to be some confusion in the reporting, or at least in the language used. The NAs are non-governmental, non-profit organizations (note the url and "About Us" statement of the NAS here); nobody in gov't can "order" these organizations to do anything. The "order" would have probably been to the BSEE to stop the study, cut off the funding, and/or stop cooperating with the NAS.
Either way, of course, the final score is the same: Oligarchy 1, Public Interest and Science 0.
? the article makes it pretty clear what happened and how it happened --- the bureau suspended the contract. Private donors may step in for completion, says the tagline.
@AndyJ- Also you can try clearing all of the Chronicle's cookies before browsing. They usually plant a "counter" cookie there that keeps track of your visits.
