Mark Hulbert: War Is Hell—But Not For The Stock Market -
Here's the thing. War is economically a lot like any other government spending program that stimulates growth and consumption. But I'd rather spend my tax dollars building schools, hospitals, bridges and roads in the U.S. than on bullets and bombs abroad. Aside from the larger ethical dimension of the consequences of war, from a purely economical perspective building infrastructure at home has a greater economic multiplier as that infrastructure will continue to be used after its built, facilitating business and our economy. Once a bomb is dropped on a foreign nation its "value" has been expended. So why is it conservatives like spending tax dollars on killing people overseas, but not here at home?
Lewis: George Patton: "Now, I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his !" Regards, Ted General George Patton Opening Scene Of Movie:
You could make the morally reprehensible argument that WWII was good for America. If there was ever a time when we were "great," it was post-war. Unfortunately, vast swaths of the earth were in ruins. War ain't great.
War is 'destruction economics'. You use up bullets and bombs and have to make more. You take your unemployed and put them in uniform and have to replace them accordingly. Geez, the Egyptians building pyramids added more value.
Bring the troops home and defend the shores and you could cut the defense budget by $60B/year while making them stronger and better equipped and trained. cretins.
BTW, here is George Patton's real speech. Put the kids to bed first.
Guns or butter, eh? Gotta respect the guys who served. They don't get to choose whether or not to go, or whether the fight even makes any sense. Country Joe and The Fish. Woodstock. If the F*** word offends you, just zip your cursor past it, at the start. "Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag." ......OK, that was cut from this clip:
