Krispy Kreme-Owner JAB To Buy Bakery Chain Panera Bread

FYI: JAB Holdings, the owner of Caribou Coffee and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, said on Wednesday it would buy bakery chain Panera Bread Co (PNRA.O) for $7.2 billion, as it expands its coffee and breakfast empire through the biggest-ever U.S. restaurant deal.

JAB, the investment vehicle of Germany's billionaire Reimann family, has built up an empire of coffee and food chains through a series of acquisitions in recent years, including that of K-cup coffee pod-maker Keurig Green Mountain Inc.

Ted

  • My favorite hangout; sure hope they don't change it. As I said on another thread re: DPZ, PANR since 1999 has shot the lights out, now it's over the moon. Do I still own it, of course not!
  • You meant PNRA right?
  • Please tell me that KK donuts will now be sold at Panera. Penn Station NY is the closest KK donut shop around my part of New Jersey.
  • You must be joking.

  • @BenWP , my favorite place also to hang out most weekend mornings. I must say though that every "new" opening Panera is cookie cutter, not-as-cozy as the 1st ones. I will drive an extra 10 miles to go to one that still has the cushy chairs and fire place to sit by. All the new ones that have populated our area, and there are many, have a few booths, stark table and chairs and a fire place built 5' above the floor in a wall. Not the same. Might as well be at Dunken-Donuts.
  • @MikeM: There are differences among Panera and I like the traditional ones. Where I live in Ann Arbor, there are no fewer than five, whereas Bloomington, IN, another Big Ten town had only one when I was there about five years ago. Panera "hosts" a lot of meetings (tutoring, school fund-raising, job interviews, sales meetings, etc.) so it's not always possible to vegetate in peace. I go for my own combo of half dark roast/half light roast Costa Rican coffee. If I saw any evidence of a KK donut, I'd flee.
