Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
@Anna There are some unwritten rules as to what is allowed off-topic and what is not...I haven't quite figured it out yet, so I try not to start an off-topic thread anymore...I hate getting scolded! But sometimes I've just gotta chime in! Maybe two off-topic comments = one on-topic comment? I happen to like the off-topic threads...people seem kinder... and funnier!
@little5bee- Stop worrying about "scolding"! There really aren't any unwritten rules with respect to off-topic matters, although generally such posts are supposed to have at least a tenuous financial aspect which might conceivably somehow affect the performance of mutual funds. However this is frequently more honored in the breach, and the "Off-Topic" corner is actually pretty loose.
MFO is a direct descendant of a site which was called FundAlarm, and the guardian of that site was fiercely unforgiving of off-topic posts, and deleted them without mercy. Some of the oldtimers here prefer that approach. Ted, for example, has frequently advocated for the removal of the entire "Off-Topic" section. That preference of course is their right, but it does not govern the environment here on MFO. David Snowball, who is responsible for MFO, is much more tolerant of off-topic conversations, as long as they maintain general civility- a simple standard which regrettably is sometimes not maintained.
There are a number of newer posters here who unfortunately seem to prefer partisan argumentation and aggressive disruption to an informative exchange of viewpoints. One of the more obnoxious enjoys labeling me as a "hallmonitor" for attempting to promote the civility which Professor Snowball has requested, to give you an idea of the quality of his contribution.
OT stuff is fine with me. A reasonable mix seems appropriate.
15 years ago that Buckeye stuff would have been fighting words (as a Michigan resident). No more. Sports has become a big bore for number of reasons - not the least of which is the over-commercialism.
Now the big news - Steven Cobert debuts on CBS tonight. Predict he'll clean the clocks of J. Fallen and the rest.
