Investment Plan 101

With apologies to Maurice, this article from Seeking Alpha "Setting Up And Running Your Dividend Growth Investment Plan Like A Business" is written with stocks in mind but I think one could easily apply most of the principles to mutual fund investing (e.g. setting up one's portfolio) as well. I believe that without a plan and some goals you're just messing around in the marketplace. Elementary for some but this article outlines a good start.

If I thought there was harm in advising folks to have a plan.....

Edited to add - at least the author isn't a lawyer.
  • Basically, nearly everything I own has to pay a div and varies from less than 1% to 10%. What doesn't pay a div are things that I think have potential to eventually. I'm not diversified, largely have a view towards sectors I like and/or characteristics of a business that I like.

As for Indiana, I don't want to get too political here because that rarely turns out well on this forum. However, these discriminatory laws are terrible, but almost seem like gateways to discrimination against more and more various groups.

That said, from a more practical standpoint, I look at these laws and think, "hunger is a terrible problem in this country. Our infrastructure sucks in many cases. The education system is...not great. But this is what time and tax dollars are spent deciding on?" Really? I'm glad there's been the backlash there has been.

Whether it be left wing/right wing or whatever, our country has - in dismaying fashion - slid further and further into being divisive. Things are not great in this country in many regards, we need everyone to feel like they can have a voice and everyone needs to join together.
