None of this takes place in a vacuum. Messages are being sent to N. Korea and Mr. Assad. N. Korea especially is literally a very large loose cannon, and we absolutely are going to have to do something to shut them down before they do something reall…

"Four airlines control more than 80 percent of the American passenger market"
Here is a very detailed and balanced perspective on how and why US airlines have deteriorated to the pathetic service levels we experience today:

@bee- Yes, I see what you mean. Our overall exposure is very conservative, but I certainly have been known to put some chips on very speculative individual punts, typically with very inconsistent results. Saves the expenses of a trip to Vegas. :)
@Mark- For years I've blamed various disastrous investment episodes on you when I've been explaining to my wife. Now you're making me feel like a scumball. OK, OK: in the future I'll blame MJG. :)
@MikeM2- So much depends upon the overall financial construction of the retirement. For instance, we have income streams from SS and pensions which pretty much cover our living expenses. Because of that, our retirement asset allocation can be much m…
Ignoring the preconstructed set of platitudes which most of us have now firmly committed to memory, I took notice of Mark's comments, which are always worth consideration. I certainly agree with him, and in fact here are those paragraps which he men…
@Sven- I'm guessing that you meant to say "These people have enough money so that they will NOT serve a single day behind bars ", but your anger is totally justified, and I'm with you for sure!

I'm confused as to how it can be both "2.20% over the past 3 years" and "3.5-4.5% every year except 2012". Surely one of these two statements may be in error?
@Catch22- Howdy. Not sure what you mean by Your linked story is to a "him". I ran the link and it does go to the correct article in the SF Chron, by Kathleen Pender.

So it is... wrong thread, I mean. That got right by me too. Over in the correct thread I was kind of wondering what had happened to my smartass post, above. I put it down to advanced age and deteriorating memory... maybe I had only thought about po…
@catch22- I had an exchange of opinions on this very subject a few years ago with MJG. I know that this will be hard to believe, but he is adamant that "Hi Guys" was fine fifty years ago and is still just fine, thank you. >sarc< Unlike him to …
@Ted- About the time of your film clip Ernie worked out of KGO-TV, the local ABC TV station in SF, when I was in my 20's. I worked for the TV transmission section of Pacific Bell, on the midnight-to-8am maintenance shift, and would run in to him fro…
"How the heck do you "suspect" person you are talking to over the phone is suffering from dementia??? "
Much the same way you might suspect that someone you are responding to on MFO might be suffering from dementia.

"The freakin' problem is that a lot of these people with useless degrees are still employed because there is no one to fill the job, and not because they are competent OR will ever become competent."
@VintageFreak- But man, they are still employed …
@rono- Not to worry! While your state government may be a little "iffy" right now the folks in DC are on top of everything and will compensate for any local problems.

@MikeM- If I'm reading Anna correctly, she seems to be extrapolating on my observation that an HSA is an advantage only under very limited conditions.

Just one quote from DM's Washington Post link:

My own impression was that the Rand Paul $5000 HSA tax credit would be fine for those who had a spare $5000 handy to put into an HSA every year. I suspect that many of the lower-income people most in need of help with medical care wouldn't get much …
A very good opinion piece by Republican commentator Peggy Noonan. Dated two weeks ago, it's a shame that no one listened.
Reach Across the Aisle, Mr. President For health-care reform to succeed, it requires buy-in and compromise from both parties.
