Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
I currently own one and used to own two others of the funds mentioned in Dr. Snowball's original post above. One of my biggest investing mistakes was to act on Morningstar's recommendations. For the actively managed funds portion of my portfoli…
I've been a Fidelity customer for over 30 years; I'm not at all concerned. I take reasonable risks under the circumstances in life and that is one of them.
Active vs. passive and investment allocation option discussions are among my favorite threads on this forum. I appreciate the contributions of all. That having been said, many of these discussions are "above my head" and perhaps totally not unde…
PIMCO has many variations of their "PLUS" strategies and I don't really understand any of them. Some of their "PLUS" funds do well compared to their benchmarks and others don't. I'm resolving many of these decisions by moving to index funds.
I tried that and it didn't work for me. My experience was that the "go anywhere" fund managers are no more likely to "beat the market" than other managers.
Yes, Scott, I agree, apples and oranges. Although many investors would disagree on terminology, I thought of PAUDX as one of my alternative, go anywhere or satellite funds. Decided to put the sale proceeds into a more traditional stock/bond mix. Wh…
Back in the day, I used to plan my reallocations and new fund purchases around the publishing of the Lipper Awards list. Now, I look for curiosity purposes only. Thanks as always, Ted, for providing the links.
Great post, MJG. I'm following a very similar strategy. Back in the "olden days" (pre-Internet), I would spend a lot of time pouring over Morningstar star ratings in an attempt to find the "perfect" funds. What a huge waste of time and lost profit…
Does anyone have experience as a customer of Good Harbor? They seem to offer some impressive investment results on their Website. But, as they say, past results don't guarantee future returns.
@Old_Skeet I think you may be on to something. After underperforming the S&P 500 by nearly 30% over the past year, how much worse can it get?
@Ted Keep those daily links coming!
The PIMCO gang seem to be wrong about their "macro" bets as often as they are correct. With all of their research and brainpower, if they can't get it right, who can? Makes me think more about indexing...
Several months ago, I introduced a discussion about managed ETF (index) portfolios to this forum. A few participants attempted to quash this discussion, stating that MFO is for mutual fund discussion only. The thread remained and I'd like to th…
I recall this issue being discussed a few weeks ago. Personally, I find many of the links to be useful. If not, I just scroll past them. Thanks, Ted, for taking the time to provide this useful service.
I find many of the articles to be useful. If interested, I click. If not, I scroll past. Putting them all in one posting or a designated area might be a good idea.
I installed Start8 which gives Windows 8 computers many of the operating characteristics of Windows 7. I know many people are opposed to using this and similar downloads, but it has worked great for me.
Although this discussion might more appropriately take place on bogleheads.org (or a similar forum), I'm interested in your viewpoint. Perhaps other readers are making active/passive decisions as well. Would you be willing to share your core and sa…
MJG - I don't feel that you are proselytizing and look forward to reading your commentary. Thanks again to the moderators for permitting an active dialogue.
Reply to @Ted: Sometimes people make outrageous statements to call attention to themselves. For example, I could state that the Buffalo Bills will win the 2014 Super Bowl. Unlikely to happen, but if it does I will look like a hero. If not, who wil…
Reply to @Ted: Good advice with a few caveats: I don't think I'd pay "extra" for DFA funds. I like the lazy portfolios, but choosing the "correct" one can be tricky. For example, I like Swensen's Yale portfolio, except that it has stumbled rece…
Unless you have a substantial (in your opinion) amount of money involved, I would suggest a 30% investment in each of T Rowe Price, Vanguard and Schwab target date funds. You could pick the target date year based upon your desired asset allocatio…
BobC, thanks for your comments. My intention was not to suggest how anyone should react to performance changes in mutual funds. Please accept my apology if my comments could be construed otherwise.
My illustration was only for the purpos…
Certainly many people are successful in trading mutual funds. However, others might be more successful holding a long-term managed ETF portfolio. Personally, even if it is possible for me to identify (using past performance results) a mutual fun…
I have seen studies suggesting that, over longer time periods (5 years plus), the vast majority of active managers do not outperform their benchmarks. Of course some active managers will outperform, but the issue is identifying them and getting i…
@claimui - My thought on PAUIX is that perhaps the worst is over. Since a number of investors seem to be running for the exits, maybe I'll stay in and see what happens. (from another posting, just a few minutes ago). May I ask what might be a fooli…
I'm also giving some thought to replacing my PAUDX with a similar holding. My concern is how MFLDX, WBMRX and PMHDX will perform during a major downdraft (such as 10/01/07 - 03/09/2009). MFLDX performed well, although not quite as good as PAUDX. …
After reading about PAUDX in this forum, I purchased some this past December. At one point, I was hoping that PIMCO could become a "one stop shopping" fund source for me, as much as any one fund family could be. Over the past eight months or so, PAU…
