I know you are not a fan of his, Mona (understatement :) )
Another Bills fan!!! Junkster just sent me a note saying the same. GO BILLS! They will be right down the road from me when training camp starts next week at St. John Fisher College. But tickets sold out in hours, so I won't be going. Are you from the area, Western NY?
Crash, I didn't take the time to look at the high entry investment on TIBIX since I knew it wasn't available to me in my 401k. Might as well take it off my watch list (I wouldn't pay the load). Thanks for the feedback.
Skeeter, thanks for the other…
I would suggest a global fund with a more multi-cap portfolio - TIBIX is an excellent choice. The management has many more high quality dividend paying choices if they can expand outside the U.S.
edit: I spoke before reviewing. It is not multi-cap …
Seems people like to pick at Skeeter's portfolio of 50+ funds. I have even commented that that many funds becomes index-like. But what is most important in his defense is his consistent comment, "it has worked well for me". I think, most likely the …
I thought this commentary might be about a strategy to exit his fund. But no, just more of the same bubble talk that doesn't seem to correlate with investing returns.
Depends on who's considering? Dig deeper?
from their website:
The RiverPark/Gargoyle Hedged Value Fund seeks to purchase undervalued stocks and hedge part of the stock market risk by selling a blend of index call options. By combining a short call…
davidrmoran: RGHVX would not be considered a small-mid cap fund. As per David's write up on this fund:
Objective and strategy
RiverPark/Gargoyle Hedged Value seeks long-term capital appreciation while exposing investors to less risk than broad stock…
Catch, you just made my point!
First. I don't agree with the presumption that active managed funds in a given category are all the same and can not offer diversification within a category/sector.
Precisely. There is no presumption on my part that m…
Yes, you should buy the other FPA funds so that you have the entire collection :)
Sorry about the sarcasm, but do you need a global fund having many of the same stocks as the international fund? Do you need a mid cap growth fund or a very conservat…
Hi Charles. It might have been a down week, but your Whitebox and FAAFX funds both were up this week.
I've been having fun watching the results of WBMIX versus RGHVX which I hold. It's like a horse race with Gargoyle up by a length - year to date …
Thanks for the feedback Hank. I tend to think you can run into the same inconsistancies and problems at every brokerage, especially if your communication is on a phone line with changing customer associates. TRP has a very good reputation and my pla…
Hi Hank. I've been reading this thread, somewhat casually, only because my 401k has been with this same 'yet to be named but everyone knows who' Baltimore brokerage (TRP). I recently changed employers and have been trying to decide whether to keep t…
How can the Marketfield fund possibly be "highly flexible" with total assets over $21 billion. It may have been a great, flexible, well managed fund a couple years ago when you first started talking about it, but at some point the management sold ou…
Hi Hank. If you are looking for an alternative replacement for your market neutral fund, give RGHVX at least a look. I bought it about a year ago and have been very pleased with how it handles the ups and downs in the market. Steady-Edie so far.
That's great Bee. I'll cheer for any team from the 'old' Big East. One of my favorite games I ever watched was the Syracuse - UConn 5(?) over time classic. Go Huskies!!!
Saw this on 60 Minutes last night. It's hard to believe that what Wall Street market exchanges are doing isn't illegal. But apparently it's not. Basically they, in an incomprehensible small time, milliseconds, can see what you are buying, buy it fir…
Hi DavidV. What I found personally is that it is difficult to do-it-yourself and beat a well managed Target Date, allocation or balanced fund over time. The reason isn't portfolio construction purse, but the discipline needed to stay diversified, re…
To little info to give any advice. There are different "facilities" having a huge range of expenses, independent living, assisted living, nursing home... They get more expensive as the care increases. Costs could be $40000 to $100,000.
Hope they h…
You could always move the money into a smaller, nimbler MFO L/S favorite like ARLSX. That fund only has a little over $200m in assets... Except that fund is down over 4% for the year. (yes, I'm being facetious).
Not to minimize your concerns becau…
Absolutley agree with jafink63. I like Guinness, but Guiness in Ireland taste much better - much smoother, less bitter than what you get any where else. My wife and I got in a conversation with a cab driver on a trip to Dublin back in the 90's. I t…
I re-read your original post a couple times and I think there are two statements you made that make what you are asking contradictory. For one, you ask what is the acceptable risk for a 49 year old 15 years from retirement. By the book, you should b…
This bill, conceptually, sounds like a great idea to me. But I agree with John that there is no safe-guard for government raiding the funds for other "needs" - ones that get them reelected.
Expanding or relaxing rules around IRA's doesn't really g…
I'm not a computer aficionado, but I use ubuntu on an old Dell lap top my daughter gave me. It is great for accessing the internet. Seems there aren't a lot of bugs and viruses trying to infect your computer like one running on microsoft. But, if yo…
Ron, you are right. The original poster was asking for deep value fund. You don't get much more deep-value and long-term good than the Oakmark funds.
Lets face it. Everyone has their favorite and there is no way in hell to know which of these fund…
Funny you mention bitcoin and gold. Though I have no interest in bitcoin, I read this article in the newspaper yesterday. The comment I highlighted below got me thinking, if a digital currency took off, bitcoin or something else down the road, would…
My .02 is that the large cap field is the prime category NOT to hold multiple funds. Every time an analysis is done on managers adding value over indexes, large caps offer the least amount of alpha. Totally agree with Bob. The only way a LC is going…
Reply to @cman: pretty rude comment.. Mike didn't precipitate anything and he has no power over how members spend their time or how they interact with each other. That's just silly.
Mike, you are right. We do have a couple condescending people here…
:) I was reading your post and the server went down. How did you do that???
Guess I didn't notice the MJG's typical passive-aggressive slights or maybe I've just gotten use to them. I remember my first post, oh, probably back in '06-'07, I got ba…
Hi Mike. I'll throw in my 2 cents. Advice from this web site or any other would be interesting, informative and entertaining, but nothing more than that. Lots of opinions but no-way a financial plan. It would be interesting though to see how your or…
Per M*, the up/down capture ratio for RGHIX says it captures 82% of the gains of the S&P500 and only takes 56% of the losses. RGHIX has returned almost exactly the same, 19.9% for RGHIX, 19.4% for the S&P500 over 5 years. I'd say the fund is…
