Right before you guys posted about WAFMX I had just been looking at some of its drawdown percentages (or actually lack thereof) since last June's bottom. I was going to post some comments tomorrow about its amazing trend persistency.
If I were a…
Reply to @STB65: I simply check the Morningstar rankings YTD for various fund categories. Then I make sure the momentum is still there for the past few weeks, month, etc. My way is not suitable for most as I am too active. I won't hang around a…
Talk about the best of times for bond investors here, there, and everywhere ........ Hope the Fed says nothing Wednesday afternoon to upset the party. I am getting repetitive here but in bondland I am 70% with 28% PGDIX (yes, I know not considere…
Reply to @tigerman3: Thanks for weighing in with some first-hand experience. I can't say I am surprised. I am probably the biggest proponent for momentum trading/investing than anyone here. Unlike say a Janet Brown and her firm, I am not burdene…
What I wrote long, long ago about moving averages
" As with volume analysis, I never use moving averages in my trading. I find them to be much ado about nothing. You might want to read Larry Williams's The Definitive Guide to Futures Trading an…
Maybe we should talk about commitment/hard work and trading/investment success. Anyway, I am not proud about it, but during the week it is almost 24/7. I want to be aware of anything that might impact my positions. Shortly after our U.S. marke…
Reply to @Mona: I wasn't kidding was I when I said I have been at this longer than you have been on this earth. Which of course doesn't mean much of anything. Of course your post is tongue in cheek because you know how enamored I am with the per…
Reply to @andrei: 47 years in this game and I have found little to no correlation between smarts and investment/trading success. The best at this game are the ones who do their own thing and design their own strategies custom fitted to their uniqu…
Mona, Bob C would be your best bet. I tend to be too much outside of the box for this forum and how I trade/invest. I also tend to concentrate in whatever is working best. My opinion is that you are overthinking this too much and you have too many…
Your thread topic sounds bullish, especially in light of how far the market has come since the 09 bottom. Didn't click on ther link because I think zerohedge is poison to one's net worth.
PHSZX is heavy in biotech and biotech, the hottest sector YTD, is setting up for one of its worst days of the year today because of earnings out of AMGN. So if you are inclined to buy dips here's your chance. If biotech doesn't come back this aft…
Reply to @Investor: Thanks, are you sure about its exposure to junk? It would explain a lot. But I had just been trying to get a better handle on its bond exposure on their web site but no luck. Yes, 300 stocks and 800 bonds but also another cou…
In the bond portion of my portfolios sold most of my junk bond fund (WHIYX now at under 10%) and used proceeds to increase my exposure to PGDIX and PONDX. My other bond fund is NFRIX.
Hedge funds, just another investing gimmick that is foisted upon a public still scarred from 2008. Their returns since the 2009 bottom has been dismal. Prior to that, nothing to write home about.
Edit - *Dismal* as compared to a blindless buy an…
Reply to @AndyJ: Andy, thanks for catching this. Must be an age related thing or I am becoming dyslectic. I meant to type PGDIX *not* PGINX. PGDIX has something like 800 bonds and 300 stocks and in stocks it's very heavy in utilities. Also ha…
Per Morningstar Commodities Broad Basket Funds percentage annualized returns

1 YR - 8.17
3 YR - 0.44
5 YR - 11.44
10 YR +2.98
The numbers speak for themselves.
Reply to @scott: I guess to each their own. It was ingrained in me when was I was a teenager from a financial writer named Benton (Ben) Davis that wealth was created from ..... " Stock market success comes from following a principle. The princip…
Reply to @Charles: Charles, kudos to some super analysis on ARIVX. Analyis being a trait this right-brained thinker never mastered. But it begs the question, why hold this dog bone of a fund??
I am always wary of funds (especially when they are underperformers) that get a lot of press on this board. It's the herd mentality in action. Maybe we should keep quiet about RYOIX and GASFX. Then again, good press, bad press, or no press, not mu…
Reply to @Investor: It must be an age thing as I am about the polar opposite around 72% bonds and 28% equity funds/individual stocks. Albeit never have done an x-ray and my largest position which I consider as bonds is probably considered stocks …
Reply to @scott: Scott, you beat me to the punch. Every afternoon I look at the insider stats for my stocks using the link below. It's my favorite site for insider statistics. I was pretty surprised, actually shocked, to see such a large purcha…
Charles, Over the years I've been on various trading boards with all sorts of self proclaimed technical trading experts and gurus using a plethora of esoteric and arcane technical indicators and oscillators. Trust me, (except for possibly one fell…
Reply to @scott: Scott, I tend to agree. But besides the possible takeover factor, as you know this is also a bit of a turnaround play. I missed buying CVS albeit may buy on some type of correction so figured why not just buy the weak duckling in …
I had so much luck in the drug and drugstore sector with ABC, WAG, and SNTS that I started a position in RAD today after it went negative after hitting yearly highs. I rarely if ever fool with penny stocks but like the story here. Like my other sp…
Thanks, great link Pat and soooooo true about the gold (and silver) bugs.
Edit: This may sound facetious but it's not. As the link points out, it is truly a religion with the gold and silver bugs and if someone ragged me about my religion I wou…
Reply to @Investor: YTD ARIVX is *barely* above water and its YTD and one year performance is atrocious compared to its peer group. Not my idea of creating wealth via mutual funds.
Nicolas Darvas convinced me of the power of momentum when I was 14 years old back in 1961. Trouble was, it took me until 1985 to finally implement it profitably in a manner that was suitable for me.
Reply to @MikeM: You have my kind of funds, especially RYBOX and GASFX. (but why the load RYBOX instead of RYOIX) Best of luck. I see so few here with momentum funds, especially in this market of double digit gains. Surprised you are still hangi…
Didn't even read the link because I could have told you that long, long ago. If anything high intelligence is an impediment to creating stock and bond market wealth because (at least from my experiences) smart people make it an ego thing. Meaning…
Life is too short and before you know it you wake up and you are over 60 pushing 70. My point is, I sure would have hated being in any of these funds the past five years much less the roaring 80s and 90s. When you are young you can't live in cons…
The day before yesterday they really hit the tight rising channel stocks. I am down to six stocks mentioned before - SNTS, LGND, NPSP, ABC, AMCX, and WAG. I added to WAG and ABC on this morning's selloff. The market has been very resilient in li…
Reply to @Mona: Hi Mona, OSTIX is more of a multi-sector bond fund where the manager has the option to go wherever he feels are the most opportunities in bondland. I haven't looked at its holdings but if he is in junk now he may well be late to th…
Reply to @MJG: We seem to agree 110% and nice commentary above. I could really tell you some stories about some of the so-called trading gurus. I once wrote a piece titled "Crooks, Con Men, and Charlatans." Even you would not believe some of …
Reply to @Investor: LSFYX, no, I talk about it a lot but never invest in it. I explained once why not. It's probably peculiar to me, but I prefer income funds where the divs accumulate daily and then you see it end of the month in your account as…
Reply to @MJG: >>>I always revert to the numerous DALBAR, Morningstar, S&P scorecards, and academic studies that backstop my valuation of the matter. In total, these studies demonstrate that private investors are either not aware of t…
Reply to @JoeNoEskimo: Good luck with a pullback in WAFMX. I have a smallish position and it's about a pure a trender up as you can find in an equity fund.
Edit: Sorry, I guess I already posted about its trendiness in this thread earlier.
Reply to @Investor: I have a history with MWHYX as it's a junk bond fund. It's a bit ahead of its category this year but it can have periods where it really lags. Even though junk is insanely overpriced I ventured back in with my all time favorit…
