Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
Here is a different contrarian indicator (opposite direction from the bespoke sentiment):

The concern is that Cyprus is the test lab for other EU countries (Spain, Portugal, Italy...) that might seek to replicate this bailout procedure - which essentially rapes the nation's savers.
This is unprecedented in modern history as far as I kno…
TFSMX was another good one (alas, it closed to new investors). Though it yielded more conservative returns, it was steady.
MFLDX has performed well. I don't trust most of these other long-short vehicles.
How about adding a conservative allocation fund like EXDAX or USCCX.
MWCRX is interesting as well, but DLSNX is most conservative.
Also, another S/T HY fund is ASHDX, though its going to be more volatile than the steadier RPHYX that you own.
Check out SDGIX (Dreyfus/Standish Global Fixed Income I). Its a world bond fund with low volatility, and thus very steady returns. The total assets are low, allowing it to be nimble. Available via Vanguard (TF), among others.
Note: +7.5% retur…
Hogan, glad you liked it. The key for me is when will all the artificial market supports be pulled away?
As an aside, I'm always skeptical about the decreasing Unemployment rate (and the somewhat unfair way its calculated), especially when I rea…
It doesn't hold too many short positions, but Litman Gregory Master Alternative Strategies MASNX is an interesting vehicle. Its only been around for a little over 1 year, so its not battle tested yet - and you have to get past the high ER. A lit…
I must confess, I'm not happy now that I realize (at least, assume) what they've done here. And the required 6 mos. holding period means I'm stuck with my mistake.
Its no wonder the MF industry is losing assets.
Reply to @scott: MFLDX is definitely not afraid to use it shorting ability, as noted by its very recent performance. Its fun to have a chance to make money on both sides (long-short), but so rarely is it executed well.
The only thing abou…
Sometimes its best to sit back and watch what unfolds.
If you feel like you've missed the boat, well...maybe you can catch the next one. Just have to wait a bit.

Get off your high horse, these message boards aren't all about you, and what YOU disagree with.
Others can post their opinions, or vent. You can ignore what you don't like.
Deal with it.

Funny, I pictured you and your cronies getting drunk at the local VFW, touting the US as the eternal superpower of the world.
AAII investor sentiment survey was 48% bullish vs. 19% bearish as of 1/25/12 report. A slow melt-up wi…

I don't care who appointed him, I just know that he will make Greenspan look like a wizard when its all over. And that's a feat.
Obama has kept a lot of the same fools (Larry Summers ring a bell?) that Clinton had on board. I'…
Yes, lets follow Japan's blueprint! Keep those rates low and those zombie banks open for business! The U.S. Govt is just as corrupt as any other, and Bernanke is Obama's puppet. I can't wait to see how this all plays out.

I've been using RPHYX. It held up well during its one test so far (3Q 2011). No, not a cash substitute, but no bond mutual fund could be.
I've also mixed in some ARBFX, VWINX and VFIIX and I sleep just fine. Upside is very limited, but low vol…
Similar to "Bee's" posting, I once held WWNPX, CGMFX and FAIRX. Sold them all years ago, no looking back. The only one of them that caught me for a loss was CGMFX - Heebner's luck had long since run out before I had finally bought in. Not my brigh…
The man has made millions in mgmt fees from HSGFX, a fund that is hedged against...itself. He's a permabear, plain and simple.
HSTRX is a simple fund (mostly Treasuries) that has performed consistently.
Huss also does fitness on the side: …
Its interesting how many retail investors are following a similar strategy, shifting from low-risk funds to "alpha" funds. I'm one of them.
Flexibility lets us feel more in control, (hopefully) mitigating downside risk. Capital preservation le…
I don't believe the answer is when to buy, its how. I'm cost-averaging in, buying small slivers for now. Keeping powder dry. Buying a low risk balanced fund like VWINX, and if/when we reach levels of hopelessness ("blood in the streets"), buy ris…
