Listened to most of the webcast.
Matthews thinks the dramatic drops were over reactions, caused in large part by the Chinese fumbling the announcement and rollout of the regs. It also occurred at the end of the month and many investors in China nee…
I prefer to stick with developed markets. In the past I have been burned listening to the hype about buying emerging market funds
So no allocation at all? Understand your concerns, but might warrant a small allocation in your portfolio.
I continue to be concerned with rising yields, which are the main threat to EM (via strong USD). Leveling out of yields would help equities tremendously (which hasn't happened), which I fear will result in tightening EM policy.
Not that I agree, but I thought this was the norm for young investment bankers? Anyway, saw this article on David Solomon the Goldman CEO. I literally LOL with this line:
"It was also last summer that Solomon was lunching at a Hamptons eatery wh…
Odd that Matthews is choosing to do this now. The Fidelity Emerging Asia funds (FSEAX and FEAAX) are both doing quite well both in terms of performance and net flows, which would indicate there is interest from our community for emerging asia-type …
My impression is that comparing Matthews Asia Small Companies against its Morningstar Pacific/Asia ex-Japan Stock fund category peers is misleading as most of them are not small-cap oriented. If one looks at the fund versus a Asia small cap benchmar…
I was just in Los Angeles last week. I was shocked the air wasn't terrible. Perhaps the first time the air in southern california has been better than northern. I'm used to the smog in LA being the biggest issue. Sad times for all those in Calif…
Has anyone heard anything about Tiffany Hsiao and an EM or Asia fund at Artisan? I actually called them and asked. However, they were mum on any details, which is not unexpected.
funny. I've stopped watching, actually. I like to get up late here. I don't have to wait past my first cup of coffee to get the day's-end numbers from back East. On an unrelated note, I'm hoping the good beach weather is not completely gone for the…
As Derf notes, Matthews Emerging Markets (MEGMX) is just six months old. It has seen consistent inflows and is sort of clubbing the competition: up 32% since inception versus 20% for its peers in the same period.
Matthews Emerging Asia (MEASX), on …
My only Matthews fund was MEGMX, although I had been strongly committed to their funds several years ago. I decided to take good profits and put them into ARTYX. I was concerned about all the turnover of managers, then the news of the outflows pushe…
I'm more comfortable losing $1000 in a mutual that losing $500 in stocks. There is no logical explanation but that's how I'm wired and why I only trade stocks hours to days.
LOL. I am the same. I think I get annoyed at the work it takes to have c…
Not trying to pile on Matthews, because I don't currently own any of their funds, but another PM recently departed after co-managing the Pacific Tiger fund for several years. He was replaced by two people, one of whom had earlier been at Matthews b…
All of the quick departures are alarming. I'm babysitting some money for someone else, and part of it --- 10% of their total--- is in MAPIX. So far, its fund managers remain at the helm. I've re-read the M* analysis of the fund, dated in August. The…
Or it maybe time to sell ?!
Stay Safe, Derf
Not a bad idea. Seems many others have been doing that as well. I just checked Morningstar. Matthews has had -$4bn of net outflows from their funds through 8 mont…
Here's a link to Matthews Asia's president/CIO resigning.

Thanks Dennis. Still not much color on why he left. Timing seems odd. 3PMs all depart at same time, 2…
I was invested in Tiffany's China Small fund earlier this year and sold to capitalize on some enormous gains. I was looking to invest again with her, but this time in the Asia Small fund, which she became lead on a few months back. I always enjoye…
