Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
I started reading "House Of Cards", but I'm unimpressed and losing interest. Besides learning a few more interesting "facts" (wink, wink), I'm not getting anything more than what I have already gleamed about the financial crisis.
Or maybe it was be…
I think what I want to do is sleep soundly, not maximize returns. Hardly about "See You in September" or "Come September" or "August Moon". Everyone only talks about how being out of the market can cost you because of compounding. This is because st…
I'm sorry, but to me it seems like all they are doing is justifying the existence of so many funds. They are putting some marketing spiel around why when they just had 2 funds, one of which they closed in the interest of shareholder, now they need s…
Nobody can predict the future. Bonds were supposed to be toast 3 years back, but then they weren't. Now again bonds are facing impending doom, and this time likely bonds will go down as interest rates eventually rise.
The only thing I can say espec…
I'm not even going to comment on this article. I can provide empirical evidence if I buy a stock, it goes down forever until I sell it and into bankruptcy if I don't. One reason I don't do stocks. Is that "investment news"?
But I do have a question…
Okay I have my answer to original question. M* has a bug in their database. Or are ANALysing and coming up with those numbers. It's Holding page for ARCNX is blank. This fund is 100% invested. I don't care to look at PCRIX because I know the real is…
Okay, but PCRIX does not have 75% in cash. If you look at M* PCRIX shows long/short cash positions. I'm assuming that happens when options are written on futures. And it shows 95% net bond position.
Something is not right.
I would like to suggest something else, if I may. Only because I have been through this myself. "I need a micro cap fund". "I need a mid cap fund".
I doubt we really "need" these things. If we really did, history indicates again and again, we go wi…
I'm not sure about RNWBX vs RSAFX. What I can say is RNWBX with its close to $20 million in assets and with its SAI also not showing any evidence of manager ownership, also has a prospectus I will not understand :)
With $8 million in assets, how good it would be if we had some evidence of manager commitment. The SAI says no manager investment. If I knew managers had like $500K of their money in this fund, even $100K, then I know the believe in their strategy. …
I'm in ARIVX and while I'm not crazy about its performance, I'm not concerned at this point. One comment I have to make though is regarding paying 1.50 and being 60% in cash. When we hire active managers, we can't have it both ways. If market tanks …
Political Science was bad enough. Now U's are handing out degrees in Financial Engineering ?!?!?! I thought the term meant something bad. I guess its okay if it is Matthews. Better check some other fund manager at Matthews has degree in Chinese Math…
Fund industry suffering from Excessive Oak-itis.
Oakmark
Oakseed
Red Oak, River Oak, White Oak
Angel Oak
There really has to be a rule. It would be fine if the fund was called Angel Maple Fund wouldn't it?
Guys, just a question. First anyone thinks market is NOT rigged?
Nothing will ever be done about it. And once in a while Madoff and Corzine come along. Does not really do jack to protect anyone. The best one can hope for is for these financial extr…
Reply to @Charles: I don't do ETFs. Can anyone verify fee from VTIPX is gone? Even if I don't sell VIPSX, I think prudent to spread over VTIPX.
When I tried to put order, I didn't see any indication of fee anymore. Just don't want to be charged lat…
Is anyone able to confirm Vanguard removed the sales charge on VTIPX. I've been waiting to roll over my VIPSX holdings into VTIPX for some time now, but I've been loathe to pay the charge.
When I had hair, it used to be Rule of 5. 2000 and 2007 paid put to that rule as well as my hair.
15% / year = Rule of 5. In retrospect impractical. Rule of 8 more realistic. I like.
HOWEVER, I do have a different rule of 5. After I buy a fund, 5 …
Conspiracy Theory 101.
Let's all "buy and hold". Let only Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, et. al. keep trading among themselves. Let's not be the "suckers" they sell too. Something tells me when they only keep eating each other's lunch, s…
Reply to @scott: Thanks. Think is I don't try to second guess my active fund managers. I mean what's the point. Research the manager and leave him to it. However, I was curious and read the article posted.
At the risk of Yours Truly ANALysing the c…
Okay so PAUDX is supposed to have low relation with S&P 500 :-P
PAUDX and PGMDX together form another 7% of my IRA. I think El Erian has received his own grief lately.
LCORX and GLBLX form together form another 7% of my IRA. And Leuthold even …
Reply to @Junkster: Hey I didn't know our ages were public information. I'm only Sixteen !!!
Now if you are saying I'm not smart, ask me again and I'll tell you I'm 2 :-P
As folks here may know, I have AQRNX and ARCNX together forming around 7% of my IRA. The problem here may be the same as problems some may have with Hussman. I bought Hussman because I liked what he wrote. Same here with AQR.
At some point of time…
Reply to @Mark: Makes one wonder doesn't it. We all need to do good job of evaluating numbers. Most celebrities seem to have made their reputation in the extended bull market. El Erian is revered for his handling of Harvard's Endowment Fund I think.…
Reply to @Joe: Actually in their SAI, it says lot of shares through Schwab. Looks like it is available, just not NTF. Incidently "Da Great Doctor" has less than $10K invested. While the younger guy has less than $500K. Makes you wonder who is actual…
So basically we need to go along for the ride for "light years" while toner in Bernanke's printer does not run out, and then head for the hills.
More, More. Give me more !!! :-)
Can someone please tell what was the last time / any time Bill Miller outperformed in a BAD market? I mean why should I just not invest in something like UMPIX instead?
We need to stop making celebrities of fund manager. I mean I know Financial Pro…

Eventide’s investment philosophy is rooted in the biblical understanding that God’s great intent for business is that it serve and, in turn, bless humankind . . . and that companies that prosper best, and sustainably, are the …
Okay I'm going to halt my purchases of AQRNX and ARCNX till end of the year. I worry when fund company starts launching funds like they are going out of style. WTF does it need so many of such funds?
If you see the chart below, you see SMVLX started bettering VFINX only in later half of last year. These IMO skews all performance numbers. Also I'm not sure it is less volatile or safer. For a buy and hold approach IMO, it is a crap shoot as to whi…
