Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
Hmm...I've been holding off on buying SEEDX. It perfectly meets my criteria for moving my portfolio to all go anywhere funds. For some reason, my gut has told me to hold off on this fund. However, I will seriously re-examine my decision.
I think e…
Reply to @Ted: Long/short does not mean shorting market. It means going long and going short at same time. Fact it NLSAX manager in his latest report actually is bullish on the market. That does not mean he will not short anything.
In any the idea…
Reply to @ducrow: First, I need the fund available at one of my brokerages and it isn't. Second, you quoted institutional shares, and the investor shares carry a load not to mention ER goes up, but admittedly less than NLSAX. However, load is the re…
Reply to @Accipiter: :D i see my ugly mug now. Thanks. My daughter made that "avatar" of me on some website when she was just 5. So I take it very personally.
IMHO, we have so many brokerages with NTF funds, there aren't many funds you have to pay commission. And for those you need to buy absolutely be it FAIRX or COBYX or whatever, you can buy directly with company.
I cannot make an argument for ANY fun…
IMHO we have had enough things to worry about over the last few years. Gnats circling around her heads, some big, some small. If all of us were less concerned all of our portfolios would be worth more over the last 5 years.
I have turned cautious F…
The real tragedy is not all of us can work for non-profit organization. Then again, who knows if those are not "no profit for some lots of profit for others" situations.

I'm going to try my darndest to make it more difficult for folks like msf. Forgot how smart people are on MFO. I will hide more information next time :)
Yes Accipter. I think I got that right. What I'm saying is I did exactly what you said. My picture has my torso and head. I selected just my head for thumbnail. However on the posts, I see a shrunk copy of my entire picture instead of my thumbnail.…
I do some technical ANALysis to manage invested % in my 401k. Nothing fancy, and nothing like 10 Month SMA crossover. And I make sure I don't run afoul of "trading violations". I average 10 changes a year. I'm happy with what I'm doing.
Reply to @Desota: I 401k I agree. Select ONE Target Fund and hope it does the trick. It may not be "sector" diversified. But then what author is suggesting IMHO is patently ridiculous. Cannot be achieved in 401k.
This is like me writing an article…
Yup! Timing. Emerging markets have fared poorly. Fund marketers have finally learned. Don't launch a fund in a sector/area after it has gone up a lot. That is a strategy for failure that everyone has recognized. "Me too" funds will garner no assets.…
I do want to read everything and learn, but when the following contradictory statements start the article...
Conventional wisdom suggests a well-diversified stock portfolio will generate reasonable returns over time.
Unfortunately, over the past …
Yes, I'm worried about Calamos Management Change. Especially because Calamos I thought it was a family run business with several Calomos Jr and Sr folks on the management roster. If the Senior Most Calamos wanted to scale back his involvement becaus…
Reply to @Ted: Funds of Funds may or may not work. I'm sure there are good ones and bad ones and we should not count Target Allocation funds here at all. PAUDX and PGMDX while it may be a strategy, I think they can invest wherever they like. I could…
We all have our pet peeves :)
I'm still holding on to PAUDX and PGMDX. AQRNX and ARCNX are what I'm looking to sell. They put up the semi annual report last week. Waiting - only so long - for "commentary" for the 2nd quarter.
After making some "Utopian" and "Rational" mistakes, I simply can't get excited about a fund that shows $6M in assets.
Hopefully 3 year record will drive some publicity and asset growth making fund sustainable, only after which I will put it on my …
Improving Global Economy? Sorry, but I don't think this view is generally shared is it? We seem to be at inflection point right now with people fearing the worst.
Or so I thought...
Reply to @Ted: Aw come on Ted. You may no longer need this bullsh--, but we need your bullsh-- :P
I'm sure it will get sorted out. On the other hand you could tell your wife, significant other, or even both - if you are so inclined and in that situ…
Everything is marketed based on PAST performance. Indexing is better because in PAST it has been proven to outdo most active managers.
FUNDAMENTAL indexing is better because back-testing results, Arnott could show it worked better than traditional …
The only problems I have logging to MFO is from iPad1. NEVER been able to log on. No error, just doesn't do anything as I can keep on entering login/password all day long
Sorry for being stupid. Did we try 9 month SMA. How about 11 month SMA?
Past performance is no guarantee of future results.
By the way there is 100 day MA, 35 week MA and 26 week EMA. Why don't we find the best fit curve in hindsight. No disrespec…
Remember folks. WHEN vs WHAT :)
Keep it on your radar. It had been dawdling, has come to life now. Good timing. Besides FMI has been divesting outside managed funds like PROVX. And there was a time when FMIVX was also divested.
Broadview is being …
Let me guess now. One day at a time we will get "news" bond funds at TRP, Fido, etc are also getting redemptions :-)
PIMCO, Doubleline. Who's next? Loomis Sayles? Metropolitan West?
Bottom line is each news article will generate revenue for the me…
Playing the game of probability. What fund has he picked that's in the doldrums that he thinks will outperform?
With such funds, you like the manager, ,you invest. Yes, one has to time it. WHEN vs WHY. So new investors, sure don't buy. Existing inv…
Reply to @Art: Note Commerce has a lot of funds. Neither here nor there in terms of performance. DISTRIBUTED by GOLDMAN SACHS ?!?!?!
3 Trustees are from GS. Manager does have ownership.
Reply to @David_Snowball: Reducing Funds. And while I've been stupid going into narrowly focused funds, I actually posted I would prefer getting emerging market exposure using diversified international fundsnd.
So I sold CIVVX, CEMVX lately. And pl…
Methinks Thornburg is another overrated firm like Brandywine. Can anyone provide some history on why Thornburg is so great? Besides M* saying so of course.
