Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
I have found Jim Stack to be quite useless for investing in the real world. I actually subscribed to his newsletter previously. I found his recommendations confusing and not actionable. More so because I don't buy individual stocks and I can't reall…
I seem to recall that most new funds do well coming out of the chute...which is why I'm interested in this VF.
Totally get your line of thinking. Just thinking out aloud. The ballast a fund has under it when someone gets in early and also after a co…
@MikeM. I was making up my own definition. :-)
Like the other day while we were taking a stroll I said "Look! Orange Bonnets". When my wife looked crossly at me I asked her why I wasn't allowed to name flowers.
I'm just saying I don't trust anyon…
Frankly I found it to be a bit mumbo jumbo. I did not come away with any conclusion as to whether I should buy low volatility funds NOW or not. If volatility is low today it can only go up and I think the author is saying this needs to happen for th…
I think DSENX is an alternative fund. It therefore belongs in my "alternative" portfolio as my most aggressive investment alongside WMCNX, BGRSX, MASNX, etc.
After a long time of ANALysis, I have recently started trading them. Sector fund IMO are for trading. I use the major sectors for analysis (not gold).
Currently I'm in consumer staples, utilities and healthcare. Use profunds so no trading fee issue…
There was a time I fell in love with funds. Then I realized there is nothing special about them. They do well when market does well and do bad when markets do bad. I keep FIFO selling and rotating back in to them.
So I've chosen Artisan as my fund…
i own riverpark funds in my IRA. The funds I don't own are the Mitch Rubin funds. You can see clearly how HE is the problem. He should let others manage funds.
These are the times you want to believe in god and actually wish god to come down and strike down the 4x people. There are so many other things the world needs right now and this ain't it.
While I understand freedom of speech, I understand the need for moderation. Just because MFO is on the internet does not mean it is "public". We are not a news-paper. We are more like US Chamber of Commerce which is NOT a government organization and…
@rforno. I didn't even think about that. Investors can be swayed by so many ways. Sometimes we do stuff just because we can and offer up any excuse for our actions. I've been guilty of this myself.
I totally believe more investors likely to make 2…
However: if one adds up all of the premiums paid for 2 people over 20+ years, especially if one considers a modest rate of return on the money, I feel fairly confident that the insurance company came out ahead on the deal. The max they will be out i…
BobC. Thank you so very much for a detailed response. You answered questions even before I could have thought to ask them. Really appreciate it.
Something for me and my better half to think about.
I remember well when "get yourself a little WOGSX" had the same role in portfolio recs as "get yourself a little POAGX" has now.
After unwinding that position, no more oaks, red, white, black, or pin.
But great if you have made them work for you!
I…
Hey, eliminate OT category. That's easier. Can't keep it and nitpick what is OT and what is not. We all have our pet peeves about which OT posts we like and don't like.
How quickly we forget WOGSX, POGSX, ROGSX et. al. I guess 2000 is a long time back and now we are noticing POGSX again :-D. Well I will never go back.
And I'm already in Polen Global Growth. Check!
HNASX, to buy when Scottrade transfers into TD, s…
Faber himself likes to say "at some point in their life everyone will be right". His time hasn't come yet, but it will.
And no, people will not remember all the years he was wrong.
FWIW, I always take 20% profit on 20% of my position every year a…
I must say he seems to have had a tutor in basic english.
One problem I had was lack of class he showed when he gestured off hand like one does to a bar-keep, at Pelosi when railing on Obamacare.
You point people out to felicitate them, you don't…
I protest. I own this fund. WTF they don't open their original L/S fund? I'm second class citizen? Open BPLEX now!
BPRRX has $6.5B in assets. They will close if assets increase 5% ??? Makes no sense.
BPLEX has $1.0B.
I'm mad. I mean at them.
So again, I'm asking, is this a good time to buy a High Yield fund?
I'm interested in answers to that question, too. Or, perhaps VF was being rhetorical.
Well, yes and no. I'm no James "bond", but then again like I've said before 007 does not know…
I should have watched it to improve my vocabulary and communication skills. No one understands what I'm saying, but Trump is obviously communicating so effectively everyone understands what he is saying.
I didn't know Yale used "bigly" and "bad dud…
"another" lousy year? not "a" lousy year???
last year was a great year. Which year are we supposed to remember now? Or maybe they are indirectly referring to actively managed funds, but in that case, that's normal relative to index, right?
@Prof Snowball.
I also owned Utopia Funds. I do recall receiving communication from them. It said something like Dodd Frank + state regulations in the state of Michigan made it quite impossible for them to operate as a low cost shop and remain viab…
One day there will be an article published that says investors are not smart enough to know how much to allocate to S&P 500 index, Russell 2000 Index, Bond Index and International Index. Because they are actively managing the allocations. They s…
I have visions of junior fighting with his father and leaving the house to conquer the world on his own. In some ways it has to be commended. Who knows, he may be richer than senior. :-)
@rforno. And the only people who can TELL them that are the shareholders of Parnassus funds. This is the problem number one. If they are worried about taxes, at least stop investing more money and invest somewhere else. They will get the message.
E…
The 5Yr avg returns on S&P 500 will cross 15% soon. Marketing is already going up and will into overdrive when we reach 15%. I'm going to take money of the table, or even sooner, if that happens. At a minimum, good time for rebalancing or elimin…
@BobC. Totally agree. When you buy triumphs what you buy 9/10. However, with SCMFX I'm much to blame to let myself be influenced.
The real problem is who buys a 1* fund? Everyone wants to by 5* funds. I think the *s influence people in a way simpl…
Gambling is not a word I want associated with my retirement portfolio.
"Would MFO exists if everyone indexed?"....I wish someone would have forum posted me senseless years ago about the virtues of indexing. It would have made me a lot more money.
