Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
@MikeM. That's a very good point. Fido and Schwab waive load on lot of funds. Scottrade does to some extent as well. Wonder what happens when it merges into TDA though.
I wasn't referring to star ratings. I was referring to analysts ratings. So if these are not mutual funds then the only problem I have with M* is based on first principles and not these new "offerings".
@msf okay so then you agree with what I'm saying. Schwab is not doing any wrong and there is no conflict of interest. With M* there is.
Besides M* used to rail against funds-of-funds charging an overlay of fees. How does it now become okay when M* …
@VintageFreak
OK, a logical argument about the jacket, but the bubbles in bubble tea are made of tapioca, and Asian/Chinese people and tea shops have served them for many years. I love bubble tea!
Yeah I know it is Tapioca. However if I find out it …
@msf. Yes but that difference is important no? Schwab also offers its own funds but it does not rate its own funds. But I'm still a little confused if these M* offerings are bonafide mutual funds or not.
For individual investors, Proxy voting is worthless. That said I always vote. And I always vote against every proposal every time. Always go against fund company recommendation. Never made a difference, never will.
This news affirms my decision not to renew M* Premium when June arrives.
Lucky you! What do I do? I get it for free with TRP account. I die everyday knowing I have it. I ask TRP reduce their ER instead, but they don't listen.
@VintageFreak,
Are you still accepting adoption applications?
If so, "What's for dinner?"
I just think my kids are better and will fare better than most others because I have a 1-strike-you-are-out on certain matters, that's all :-)
Other than tha…
I own WAEMX, SFGIX and CIPDX. I'm quite done with Emerging markets.
However I'm watching two emerging market funds carefully. ARTZX and ARTYX. I've always maintained ARTYX was only started because ARTZX couldn't get investors. So Artisan hires this …
And there should not be any doubt now why when some parents dream "my child will become a doctor, engineer, lawyer, sportsman, etc. etc.", I dream "my child will become a mutual fund manager".
What a job. What a freakin' job.
I think FTEMX would be my pick. Still it is still risky for me so I have to follow the "when you buy vs what you buy" mantra. So its on my list.
Now this ETOPX looks interesting, but $50K minimum.
@bee. I know some parents who would call you a tyrant :-P
My girls can spit in my eye, they will still be my princesses.
Or maybe I just want at least one of them to become even just your run-of-the-mill mutual fund manager and then no one has to …
Everyone's situation is different. I see nothing wrong with what you've done or how you are thinking. IMHO, it is also no one's business to tell you otherwise.
I never started a 529 or any other college savings plan for my kids, for instance. I jus…
@MFO Members: It's been about 20 years since I first linked Max Gunther's Zurich Axioms to the FundAlarm Discussion Board. One of the major problems I see on the MFO Discuaaion Board is that many members don't take enough risk. Here's what Max G…
I was going to stay away from this thread. Let me tell you why Yours Truly stopped shopping at JC Penny. It happened one day several years back. I learnt that a leather jacket I couldn't afford to buy priced at $200 actually took $10 to make, and $2…
I'm going to be patient. MAPIX and MACSX have been doing well lately. I'm going to look at an exit point, swap with MAVRX. Then buy MAPIX, MACSX in taxable account.
@billr. Sorry I guess I didn't understand @dolphin post. This is perfect. I SHOULD roll it over to Roth IRA. It's at Scottrade so maybe best I just visit the local office.
I don't need to prove to Scottrade what my cost basis is right? I have to d…
1) I want to invest 100% of my money I give it to fund manager that has mandate to be 100% invested.
2) I want to invest 5% of my money I give 50% of my money to fund manager that has mandate to be 100% invested.
3) I want to invest WHATEVER perce…
Isn't it funny? You thought an entire industry couldn't possibly convince you tap water is not safe enough. Or convinced you spring water tastes better. Now, on the one hand you have a flint-like situation. On the other, just because you buy water i…
@LLJB. So my wife has a 401k and ONLY this 1 piddly IRA. Form 8606. Will make note thanks.
@Dolphin Can you clarify what you mean by "no other IRA assets"? Like I said my wife has a 401k and then this 1 IRA only. Not many IRAs.
I will ready up tha…
@LLJB. If at least I can confirm the penalty is only on the gains after cost basis, that'll be good. However, it would be really nice if there is not even that penalty since the IRA was funded with after tax dollars anyways.
I've tried to get this…
So again, the chart of this fund since inception does not impress. I'm very impressed on the other hand how the fund has managed to attract half a billion almost in assets. I'm convinced in downturn this fund will be hit hard.
@MikeM. I sold out of my DLRFX since floating rate funds don't seem to be doing diddly. Regarding ACITX and the like, any reason you have not moved to "short term" version of the fund? I did so in Vanguard and TRP. Thinking going forward, the shorte…
Reminded me once again of Pictet Global Water fund. An idea before its time and also started in a bear market which eventually killed it. Who knows, maybe they will reboot it again...
I expect my global allocations funds to invest in emerging bond funds for me if they feel there is value. Or you could buy funds like MAINX. I agree with @Ted and in general don't try and buy very targeted fund or sector funds.
@Old_Joe
Given his education and exposure to the sophistication of the financial arena, it is difficult to understand how he was not able to better advise his father with respect to financial matters. Not even a phone call: "Dad, no matter what, DO…
@jerry I was just trying to find funds that will go cash if they don't find value. ARIVX was one such fund. COBYX which I own is yet another. Not sure how one could "screen" for such funds. If you have a better way, please do share.
These are basic…
Doesn't look like M* even covers this "small fund" anymore? I had owned it briefly. But even, I never "got" this fund. I was attracted to the fact manager worked at Franklin Mutual. Then it also stopped being NTF at Scottrade. That was that.
