Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
"U.S. Market Neutral Anti-Beta Fund" -- No offense, but I actually laughed out loud when I first heard that name. Dropped 20% out of the gate. Seems to be doing better lately, but still, what's the appeal of a "market neutral" fund that's volatil…
I'm not a taker here. This is basically an all stock fund that will fall with the market, though perhaps to a lesser extent. In that space I prefer VDC, VMVFX, UTG (utilities), PDT (Preferreds). Good luck.
What makes a good fund manager? One who consistently beats his index. Very hard to do, of course, but once done then quite clearly such a manager will have performed better than simply rotating to the worst mangers serially. The study did nothin…
I like and old FHTIX (you can find brokerages with low minimum initial investments); VWEAX and HYB. Have held many others over the years and these are the survivors.
DM, as I said, I don't own SHW...but wish I did. Interesting that Balchem is a specialty chemical co., like SHW. Perhaps it's easier to fly under the radar when you make animal feed or paint, thanks for the link. As for SHW, it is expensive and d…
Ain't hindsight something.
As for stabler, B is smoother since 1972, sort of, as are PG and JNJ. With a log scale (M*) it's less easy to detect smoothness and the opposite, of course.
SHW has had this remarkable rise the last six years, so there …
Why not just buy SHW and go home? I'd bet that simple paint stock beat 95%+ of all mutual funds and hedge funds over a 15 year period (almost 18% avg return). Up in 2008-2009. Biggest loss under 8%. Unreal. Anyone know a better more stable issue?
hmm. Not seeing that as much as you are. I know about the Pimco classes, thanks. Just was looking at performance of the various bond funds I mentioned, not seeing clearly how to make a true diversification decision.

expat,
>> thanks to you, David,
All hail rather Snowball/MFO, responsible for uncovering DSENX, which has had surprisingly little press.
Roger about quant processes and also derivatives (maybe).
wxm, can you elaborate on nondiversificatio…
Since 11/13, DSENX (inception date) and PONDX 50/50, much less 60/40, appear to significantly outperform most if not all of these --- except for PRWCX (which of course is on this major tear) and BRUFX. Combo Martin ratio >5 and UI >2 (short-te…

The main takeaway point in my view is this: "My thesis is this: Can you say you can pick the top 3.0% to 7.4% of all balanced funds over the next 10 years that will outperform VBINX"? Sure there will be a few out performers, but knowing which ones …
Hi wxman123!
What caught my eye was the preferred shares and the smaller companies. You look atFRESX, Cohen-Steers, Principal....they all own the big stuff. I want to own the smaller stuff that's also in banks. You need to first be average to eve…
Hi guys!
Have added some real estate to my portfolio -HLPPX- .....Why QE the world over? I see the dollar staying strong, so I do not think rates will rise much. Have also added to RYSBX - am looking for stronger dollar this year and added to WA…
Market timing does not work, period...if by "work" one means to increase total return over long periods of time. I do believe timing MAY work to prevent a catastrophic (e.g 2008) loss since one would be out of the market during the worst of a dec…
Edit: Still think the junk corporates may surprise in 2016. Albeit I don't trade on what I think, just what I see.
Also, keep an eye on Emerging Markets High Yield Bonds -Premx - the strength in the $ could provide a good dividend yield and cap …
The ETF is more diverse and includes EM debt, for example. Assuming Gundlach adds value (as I do) the ETF should be a good bet for Doubleline fans, just not at this precise moment. Over the long run I'd expect TOTL to be a reasonable proxy for the…
"However, you simply can’t find this unique bond strategy in an ETF at this time, which is why we have continued to stick with the marginally more expensive mutual fund strategy. "
Doubleline has an ETF, TOTL.
On a recent tear for sure, and that family group (GLRBX folks). Makes me reconsider WEMMX, which bests it till recently ....
Me too, doing homework last night on this. Staying put with WEMMX for now. Like James (hold the GldnRainbow) but couldn't …
Kevin, I've looked at AQR funds for some time and you certainly cant argue with the performance numbers. What are your thoughts though on QMNIX which has delivered an 18% return over the past year? Can that really be market neutral? Or said an an…
Not a big fan of long-short as a standalone strategy. The usual objective in buying such funds is to dampen volatility and limit the downside. That being said, over the long term you're almost sure to do better with something like VWIAX. If you wan…
RNDLX is a fine fund. It's had a bit of a down year because of the closed end allocation. The closed end space has been hurting this year. Expect out performance most years. And it is a "total return" fund, "The RiverNorth/DoubleLine Strategic Inc…
If you want a conservative balanced allocation VWINX has to be included in any set of such funds. This should be your first purchase, little chance of going off the range. If you don't have an account with Vanguard then GLRBX is a fine choice. T…
I suspect catalyst macro must be engaged in some form of trend day trading, most likely long-short volatility, or these guys are the smartest guys in the world. Its a relatively small fund and appears to be the flagship of the Catalyst brand. Thei…
I know that problem littlebee! Still, up nearly 10% TODAY did ease the sting of a brutal day just a bit. Think I'll stand pat for now. Thank the lord this is a 40 Act fund or you'd really have to wonder.
The play in this space is xmpt when the discount of the underlying holdings nears 10% as it is now. Not to mention the CEF space is getting pummeled in general. On the safe side why not just stick with VWLUX? The high yield in munis is often driv…
I grabbed FV at 19.10. That one trade brought me from down 4% to up a tad overall. It traded as low as $11.70! My word someone got screwed. But the explanation is simple, yes, the bids were in for who knows how long and some fools probably traded…
