Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
I'm mildly concerned about how the price movement and return on the bonds underpinning DSENX's derivatives affect it's overall return. Until I get a better feel for funds of this format I'm keeping out of it. Philosophically I'm very interested.

@Ted I'm curious what counts as big dog hunting for you. I'm aware that you've expressed fondness for FBIOX or its brethren, and described PETDX as a big dog fund. what else goes into that category?
I'm mildly surprised indexing and recent decreases in volumes have not apparently affected bid-ask spreads negatively. Though I would assume there are many technological reasons that could be shrinking
30+ and I've decided to target about 15% as where my non-em small cap allocation lies (+/- 3% depending on relative valuation and drift) global fund so the international allocation is determined by others.
I've been debating whether using the Lede is a proper introduction or not. It is the sentence the writer of the article decided on as the best hook to get you to read the whole thing and thus is supposed to serve as an introduction and summary of w…
It would happen later, but yes. This is why I ask your collective advice. It seemed too aggressive, but I was not quite sure what a realistic level of aggression was.
I wouldn't describe it as absolutely needed. But also wouldn't describe it as superfluous. If we lost it all it would not affect our daily lifestyle. It might affect where we choose to live or cause us to rent another year etc.
I think it's primarily a marketing choice which is why I mentioned that it had happened in another of their funds. Not that I necessarily forsee what problem it is solving.
@heezsafe I owe an apology. I meant to say that both PRBLX and the fund PARWX were undergoing renaming. Not that the equity income fund was also having the symbol change. Sorry for causing confusion.
@heezsafe what do you think the name change in PARWX signifies? From equity income to core seems to imply a change in focus perhaps. But the change from workplace to endeavor seems more ambiguous. So I'm not sure how much more the one means than the…
As another voice, I've found it hard using the MFO evaluation system to compare funds that have different lifespans. All the information is excellent and much is hard to find anywhere else, but for comparison between funds I usually only use it when…
My recollection from other discussions is that it is idiosyncratic to the institution. You might get in touch with the people running closed funds. Grandeur peak is especially helpful in terms of letting people who already hold their funds to transf…
I've been reading some of the codes, they're a bit above my python knowledge, but thats my weakest language I actually have experience with. One of my worries would be that someone would publish a popular piece of code and then have a personal code …
The ultimate goal would be to "demonstrate" that going FF is consistent with fiduciary duty. That is to say that it should not unduly contribute to excess volatility or reduce returns against a portfolio without such restrictions. Mostly I've read a…
David,
As always thank you for all you do. I'm not sure if you take requests, and I'm not sure if the 350 divestment campaign has stretched to your campus and student body, but it has to my alma mater and any wisdom or insight you might be able to …
@cman I will be sad to see you leave, your posts have always thoughtful and thought provoking, though I can see why it may have recently been a frustrating existence.
@cman Thank you for the insight on the vagaries of how total market index funds operate, I've been meaning to look into it. My bigger question though was in regards to how much things like good IPO seasons or "bad times" can cause active managers as…
I should read the underlying papers before giving you a response, but my initial mechanistic one using the definition in our active share section is to define cash as an asset that indexes have a weighted allocation of 0% to, while managers can hold…
@cman I wholeheartedly agree with your math, but have a few questions:
How closely do total market indexes track the total market. Yes, they use statistical sampling at the edges, but how much tracking error does that introduce?
If it is small is th…
