  • Some curious choices for sure. FIKFX is a very mediocre fund with a measly yield.
  • Available at Schwab, so must be available at other brokers also? It is not NTF at any broker I bought ZEOIX at Vanguard with a $20 fee up front. I bought a large block of it, so the fee didn't hurt much. It is holding up well during this recent e…
  • I noticed a real heavy slant towards the big fund companies, such as Fidelity, Vanguard and American Funds. I wonder how much advertising they do with *M.
  • Yes, very strange indeed. USMV is supposed to be low volatility ETF, yet it moved from about $41 on Friday's close to $27.43 in 15 mins after the open today. That's much worse than the overall market. How could a "low volatility" ETF be so much more…
  • I saw USMV down about 25-30% at the opening bell. I did a double-take when I saw it.
  • I bought some USMV at $35.50 and RCS at $7.82 - I tried to get in earlier but Fidelity was a bit slow filling orders this morning.
  • I don't own any of those alternative funds. I wouldn't know where to begin in researching them and discovering their advantages.
  • I bought a few big chunks of USMV today in the afternoon. That's it for me for awhile.
  • I own XLE and it's getting killed. I bought it a few months ago in my IRA.
  • On RSIVX, I think it depends on whether you invest primarily for income or for total return. If the former, it still looks fairly good. One indicator: last December, in the HY selloff, it did better than its peers/near-peers of the short & junky…
  • Opened a new position in GAOAX for a world allocation fund. I purchased it with the proceeds of the sale of BAICX, which seems to be acting like a high yield bond fund as of late.
  • JP Morgan finally got back to me today about my question about the fund's credit quality for bonds. They said that FINRA does not allow the use of average quality in any materials. "The calculation of this information is considered to be subjective,…
  • Both of those look like good funds. I own GAOAX and have considered RPGAX. I also own QVGIX, which you might want to look at also. I was looking at the Oppenheimer fund and noticed that the fund managers have been there for about 3 years or less. I…
  • Thank you for the information and suggestions. I have some research to do. The Leuthold funds slipped past my radar. Thank you, David.

  • It can't hurt to look. Thanks !! The US News link is always pretty good for suggestions.
  • I emailed JP Morgan to ask about the quality of the bonds held by the fund. They asked for my personal information then never answered my question.
  • Sold PFODX - not a great time to be in foreign bonds, IMHO. I put the proceeds into DLINX and ZEOIX, steadier funds at this time.
  • Interesting. Thanks for the info. Things get a little bit more hairy when you try to compare bond funds, IMHO. For example, selling an investment grade bond fund and buying a multi sector bond fund? Or what about selling a GNMA fund and buying a Inv…
  • I dumped it a few weeks ago. I don't care if it does well in a down market. It's been doing poorly for five years now. In addition, it does have a high ER for its category. I found more reasons for dumping it than holding it.
  • RSIVX has struggled this year, that's for sure. I see other funds as better alternatives for total return, such as DLINX, ASHDX and OSTIX.
  • VF you are so right on this. M* has a bad habit of either dissing some very good funds or simply ignoring them. The latter is just fine by me, since it means those funds fly under the radar and do not amass large asset bases. They also will diss …
  • I have some small losses, but they are nowhere near the amount of gains, so the offsets wouldn't come close. I do understand your point, though.
  • HI David, I was reading your August commentary and was interested in your strategy about thinning out the ranks relative to the number of holdings in your portfolio. I believe you indicated that you have started the process. I was curious about one …
  • Yes, indeed. Guilty as charged...
  • I am up 4.42% YTD and on track for my worst year since 2008. Not sure that is isolated to me or others are also struggling. I take no solace in the fact my return is higher than many of the market indexes as my goal is to consistently compound my…
  • My worst investment ever was buying Janus Global Technology around 1997. You know what happened after that...
  • I'm no economist, but it doesn't make sense to raise rates that much if the GDP stays anemic. Am I reading this incorrectly?
  • Now, the problem I have is a wash sale. If I sell RNDLX, I'll have a realized loss. But I have to be careful what I purchase with the proceeds.

  • I'm fairly curious that their 3rd largest position appears to be in RNHIX. Interesting. RNHIX is a fund of CEF funds. If you join this holding with all of the other CEF holdings in RNDLX, it appears that the managers are all over the place with CEFs…

  • It appears as though the fund derives much of its dividend from the CEF sleeve of the portfolio. Unfortunately, RN hasn't done a great job picking CEFs over the past year. I know several CEFs have been hit hard lately so I'm hoping they can identify…

  • Some of the best cartoons ever made without question.
  • Hi willmatt72, Just a thought. May I suggust that you do an Instant Xray on the funds that you plan to hold as well as those you choose to discard ... and, then Xray them as a whole to see how those you plan to keep fit together. I favor CCLAX ov…
  • Yes, I agree...it can be confusing. I had my HSA at another firm before I moved it to Saturna and it was run very differently. I also manage an HSA for my son at TD Ameritrade...also run differently. Like I said, I have not made any withdrawals, …

  • I sold Calvert Conservative Allocation (CCLAX) as I own too many balanced funds (4) at the moment. I will put the proceeds into Janus Balanced (JABAX) which I own already. I have to consolidate my holdings over the next year or two. I own too many f…
  • I'm trying the HSA through my employer for a family this year. It's a little bit confusing to start with, especially if you have prescriptions through mail order, but I'm curious to see how it goes for the year.

  • Many of the bank loan funds are having decent years over 3% YTD ala LSFYX and DBFRX. Same with many of the junk funds ala JAHYX. I've noticed the same with my bond funds - the junkier stuff is doing better than the higher quality holdings.
  • I own a few muni bond funds (SXFIX, MITFX) and higher quality funds (DODIX) that are struggling this year. The fund that has disappointed me thus far is RNDLX. I guess I expected more given the management experience.
  • Currently, I own PFODX, which has been pretty awful as of late. It has a great long-term record but....I'm hanging in there for now.
  • Yes, I would say so based on the holdings in *M. It also holds large cap stocks (both foreign and domestic) that pay dividends. I would be curious to do a chart comparison with this fund and a high yield index just to see how much they run together.
