Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
@larryB: I understand the question of fairness in regards to the rich using a retirement account in a manner not as beneficial to those with less. To some this may be viewed as an abuse. My first thought is allowing savings to grow, tax differed,…
What if there were mandatory withdrawals after an account reaches a certain balance? This would provide relief to those needing to catch-up, but address perceived abuses on the other side. Thoughts?
@davidmoran: What if the retired person is still not ready after that five year window? And, should ROTH treatment (as promised) ever be touched? ROTH's by their very nature have already been taxed, no?
Many Americans have found themselves working well beyond the typical retirement age. Many of these people are over the age of 70. The reasons for this situation matter, but for the sake of this discussion, I'll restrict my comments to the question…
You may want to look at MGGPX as well. Ted had recommended it back in February. Took me a while to get onboard. Wish I had taken the advice sooner. :-(
@LewisBraham, I would've thought you could have resisted (here at least). I believe this thread was to salute Mr McCain. He was a great American and I had great respect for him.
Keep in mind growth has outperformed, recently, so at some point the market may rotate to something else. As Old_Skeet eluded, it would be best if your portfolio was prepared for either.
@bee, good information. Makes you wonder if we're missing great investing opportunities simply because of the regulatory cost. I understand there has to be regulation, but perhaps it has tipped too far in the wrong direction. I miss Consuelo bein…
I was just listening to Liz Claman (commenting on this issue) and she made the comment that the number of companies traded publicly have been cut in half during her career from around 7k to 3.5k. Honestly, I had never paid attention to it. Made me…
@rforno: agreed (if they go too far). Quarterly reports force a company to manage to hit that bogey, if you will. As an investor, I may want this behavior, since it should help sustain a measure of volatility, and perhaps provide more opportuniti…
I have pondered the same question when reading about what I refer to as alternative portfolios such as 'Gone Fishin' and the teachings of Paul Merriman. But, for me I can't get the logic to work. My lizard brain won't allow me to buy such a thing.…
The government has a spending problem and without hard limits they will continue. Yes, the budget should be balanced. Yes, there should be term limits on all. And, yes I'm Taxed Enough Already.
@LewisBraham: This has nothing to do with being poor or Black. And, asking for an ID doesn't prevent anyone from voting. If all MLK needed to do was to obtain IDs for his congregation, 100% of them would've been registered and ALL would have vote…
I should clarify. I believe there should be a hard limit to the amount the government can demand from us. After that, I believe they should have a balanced budget. We all have to live within our means, including the government.
I believe our government has a spending problem and until that is fixed, or a balanced budget amendment is passed, I'm not willing to give them another dime.
Money and time and fear of government authority figures who time after time have incarcerated them and shot them in the back.
My intent is to be respectful, but I have no idea why you included this. My original statement stands: whether you're Bl…
