John Hussman Chimes in on the Fed, as ususal, with this most recent letter. I have a hard time disagreing with his points, but his investment guidance doesn't seem to have navigate all of this very well.

Trailer for the movie that the interview footage was apparently done for, which contains the incredibly rare footage of actual Fed members admitting that they did things wrong.
From the interview: "High-quality stocks in the U.S. are not nearly as bad as the rest of the market. "
I'd agree with this - I look at a lot of large cap names that, while not cheap either in many cases, are trading at more reasonable valuations t…
There used to be a preferred for Anglogold. GGN has a preferred, but that's really an income investment and not something to capitalize on gold.
I'd say Freeport Copper/Gold (FCX) (although that's not all gold) is an option with yield. As for GGN's…
Be careful about investing in broad EM funds. The recovery is very uneven between the countries and different funds will do very differently based in their allocation.
Agree completely with this.
No. I own Glencore (aka GlencoreXstrata) and don't want anything else to do with mining after that. I love Glencore in terms of the assets, but it's been a very disappointing investment (great in theory, disappointing in practice.) I'm not selling i…

Started building an income portfolio (30% of our taxable money). A third of the portfolio will comprise of high risk high divident "stocks". So far, over the last week, purchased KMP, APL, SDRL.

In terms of FRO, all of those stocks have been obliterated. DRYS being a particularly (in)famous example (something like $125 in '08 to $3 and change today.)
CHS Preferred (CHSCP), Graincorp (GRCLF), Gibson Energy (GBNXF.PK) and a few other things up for me, but otherwise definitely not a good day - at all. CHS Preferreds continue to be an income safe haven - they barely budged in 2008.
Scott,Maybe a lot of investors saw your video post! Thanks for your timely takes on
Thanks! It's just really a matter of being tired of following trends and moment-to-moment movements. I have a mix of income (REITs, preferreds, MLPs, healthcare nam…
Speaking of rigs, Transocean (RIG) getting creamed, now in the $30's.
I believe the Seadrill CEO also owns a substantial amount of newly listed (in the US, at least) Marine Harvest (which also has a giant dividend.)
Interesting. I didn't know about the Qualcomm-Apple connection. Makes sense though as there has to be somewhat of a standard. This also opens a new targeted ad industry as people will get ads or coupons on their phones as they shop. That could be a …
"Personally, I think the future of tech is with companies that are innovating in terms of improvements of day-to-day life. Here's a somewhat odd note. I'd rather own the increasingly tech-y Nike (people wearing Fuel Bands and using shoes that report…
@Scott: FYI: I live in a southern suburb of Chicago a half-mile from CNN's mainline south to the gulf coast. In thirty-five years I have never seen as much traffic.

Thanks for the link Scott...great read.
Thanks - I guess my whole thing is an increasing focus on what are "needs" (even something like Canadian National Rail - I don't like that they are being forced by the Canadian govt to increase grain shipments…
Perhaps like tech there may be a small bubble but the future is with both.

I think what's concerning is the shadow banking market in China, where copper and iron ore was used as collateral (http://www.investing.com/news/commodities-news/china-shadow-banking's-use-of-copper-collateral-threatens-red-metal-271498)

Not Ted, but Seadrill is - I think - an appealing stock from the standpoint of strong assets and shareholder friendly. However, with the nature of the business, it's a highly volatile stock and you have something of a battleground with articles comi…
I'm sorry but one need only look at the last name of one of the bill's authors to see where this was headed. I still wonder if BB bought more.
lol.

Thanks for the notes regarding your stay, sounds like a lot of fun. Very interesting to hear about Resorts World, as well - Genting continues to impress greatly with their properties and yet, the stock hasn't done well for a few years (the ADR share…
Scott,
I agree the new fund is something most won't understand but it has a fancy name. I also followed the Long-short fund but decided on a cheaper fund. That Pimco fund has done well.
I just think maybe the Pimco fund appeals to some advisors an…
I think the alt fund idea is still growing but the me too funds will suffer. If you have a known manager then it should sell well.
As far as Pimco goes maybe they grew too fast? There may be a time for them to go back to what they do best.
Pimco'…
Question. I think alternative fund craze should be dying out. Did PIMCO really start a "me too" fund, and has PIMCO ever closed a fund because it didn't work out, or merge it away?
There are excellent examples of alternatives, but I'm not going to g…
Uncle Bill will be wishing he did otherwise, y'think?
I want El-Erian working for Doubleline, just for the lols (although I think El-Erian goes into politics instead.)
I have no interest in investing in something that labels itself a "multi-level marketing company". I think Ackman is probably right to some degree, although I don't believe the company is worthless.
That said, I do think this investigation is the…
Great book, like his website/blog, but not really interested in another Cambria fund after GTAA. And I wasn't expecting the world from GTAA either, especially given its multi-asset flexibility. I just think that - like a lot of managed futures/trend…
Wonder if BB is buying more. By the way has he ever admitted he was wrong (which he really was) and sold? EVER? I don't recall him doing that.
I believe he's largely out of St Joe, last I looked.
As for Fannie/Freddie, my philosophy is that the gov…
I'd play Tencent via Naspers (NSPNY), although I think it's overvalued at this point. Naspers is a fascinating company though - a large emerging market e-commerce/media conglomerate.
Alibaba I'd play via Softbank if I was looking to do so. I just d…

I think people have to dive deeper than that. All of the acronyms are really broad ways to market broad ideas and concepts, and I think to some degree that works in a society that is increasingly looking for edible "snacks" of information and light …
