I have been a long term investor with FAIRX for the past 5 years and very happy that I was. But I sold over 98% 2 months ago.
I am now 73 and from my experience once a fund has such profound changes and goes south it may take quite a while to revers…

Scott how do you purchase Jardine strategic holding? Is it a closed end fund available
on US markets? Which fund of the Matthews group does it compare to? And why did you move over to this and leave Mathews? Your insight into the change would be v…
I ask this because I have been watching a fund FFRhx fidelity Floating rate high income Fund where the 30 day yield is 2.30% but the NAV stays the same for long periods. During that time there have been income distributions. So I assume the incom…
It is very difficult for one to tell whether these funds of funds do any better than one doing their own asset allocation with selected funds. It seems easier to have someone else do it but it comes at a high cost.

RE: Fairholme
My philosophy is not to remain with a fund that shows stress. I would rather sell and come back another day. In case you are worried about the fund closing then keep $2500 in it just in case it closes. My motto is " rain rain go awa…
Although Templeton Global bond GIM ( CEF)has about a 5% premium so Templeton Globla Bond TGBAX has a 5% load. So initially you are out 5% with the TGBAX but with GIM you may never be out if you sell GIM and at the same or a higher premium.

When I evaluate a fund for purchase I first look at what happened to the fund in 2008. Then I compare the fund to similar funds for 1,3,5,year return. Then I look at expense ratio.
Honestly I hardly ever evalaute the risk factors with perhaps the e…
You almost have to be a full time trader to watch the spread to come out ahead . On the other hand there probably are people who have mastered the the trade and are making a good buck.
For me I am really looking to get in a load fund without the…
I just changed it to all fund discussions.
thank you all for the education. This new site Mutual Fund observer is turning out to be a very educational experience. More than i hoped for.

I have 2 questions about GIM and other closed end funds.
1.Why worry about the premium if you can continue to hold it and some day sell at least the same premium?
2. What is a good site to evaluate the premiums of closed end funds. Also a site to c…
Maurice ,just to correct the dialogue. I never switched to Fairholme allocation. I just checked out of Fairholme completely
and reallocated the money into other funds.

I don't quite understand your comment since my fund movements are very carefully considered and it takes me days to make decisions to sell and also what to buy. Sometimes exhaustive research goes into the process.

I agree about timing the market and I do not time. I tend to upgrade to a more reasonable choice for my personal needs.
Berkowitz is brilliant and so is Bill Miller. There comes a time when you have to exercise judgment and not blind faith.
I don'…
I may come back to Fairx some day but I decided to sell this month. I did it with a lot apprehension as Berkowitz has been very good to me. I did not go into Faafx because basically I think Fairholme Investments has to much on their plate and not d…
My favorite fund in TRP is Capital Appreciation PRWCX. I use it as a core fund along with permanent PRPFX. The other part of my core is BERIX and FPACX.
One notch above my core I add some of the funds you like such as MACSX and MAPIX. ( I think I …
Max do you own any ETFS?
What is your opinion on them as a mix in your portfolio. I am usually a buy and hold guy but I noticed that Fidelity and Vanguard are clamping down on so called short term holding periods with costly redemption fees. Somet…
Kenster I am becoming more and more to your thinking.
I too hold the Vanguard Midcap index and also the artisan Midcap ARTMX and have been very happy with the results. Although I am getting more higher end expense funds it is only a small part of…
Hi Max
Glad to see a familiar face. RIVFX has nice record. But it has a 1.69% ER .
I am trying to hold the expenses down to below 1.35. Although lately I have been thinking that the the total return is net the ER. I am more flexible.
I did my fi…

SOIGX is available but only with a 5% front end load. that is what I do not want.
Yes it is a great fund. There is a class C no load but its ER is almost 2%.

I was considering ACINX , acorn international because it seems to have a favorable
Tax efficiency and its ER is not great relative to other internationals. What is your opinion?
Burt S.
I am amazed after looking at the list to realize that at least 50 % of my funds are within the list polled a few weeks ago. I basically use the same technique as CathyG to investigate funds after they appear on FundAlarm.
