The last week has been good preparation for playoff pressures....nicely done Tito.
I personally like Kiplingers, as it was one of the magazines from which I learned about investing and money management. Getting a list of recommended funds from 2008 and calculating returns to date seems a silly exercise, and done for the sole purpo…
@ bee: I sold FTR, CTL, and Win on 3/14/17, and with the proceeds purchased APO. I also capatured the dividend on both FTR and CTL. I made money on all but CTL. Yes, dividends are the mother's milk of investing, but not on penny stocks. Those w…
Ted...of the 8 tips...which do you not agree with? They seem pretty sound to me.
Mr. Van Knapp is one of the half dozen or so folks on that site I follow given their posting history.
I marvel at the marketing acumen used to demonize the estate tax. "Death Tax" was a stroke of genius.
Higher dividend and capital gains tax, no deduction for property taxes, and the elimination of deductions for medical expenses doesn't bode well f…
One of the more confounding comments about the latest tax cut scheme is that if you give a company a big tax break, they'll hire more people.
I can't quite figure out why they think that reaction would occur.
Current demographics support the concept of senior housing being a good investment alternative. There are several well established REITs in this space if you're looking for something with a bit more conventional and established track record.
I ran across this interesting tweet...

Trumpeting the size of the bomb, rather than the results (if there were any), is basically the way the government narrated the Vietnam War.
I used to fly weekly, but that part of my life/career is now over. Flying now is a horrible experience, made better only by paying more via an upgrade using miles, the selection of "premium/economy seats", or the occasional splurge for 1st. TSA pre-…
Added more EM debt via an addition to TGINX. I'm considering replacing one of my four somewhat "core-ish" bond funds with FNMIX....purists may frown on that move, but after watching this area for a few years now, I would be comfortable with the rela…
When I was looking for a cash substitute for my bucket 1 holdings, RPHYX was closed. From the Great Owl listings, SSTHX has filled in admirably for me, is NTF at Schwab, and has served its purpose well.
Yes, the Kirkland Signature brands...here's an interesting link:

As for the discount, that may be a state issue.
After a trip to Italy, I realized that you can drink a decent wine at all times without consideration of the price. They serve good local wine by the pitcher through a tap.
But really....life is too short to drink bad wine...or cheap scotch.
Go to…
thanks Ted.
As an FYI...as a result of the many references by the linkster and particularly the posts by the esteemed Mr. Braham, a subscription to Barrons seemed to be an easy decision.
So far, I really like the daily commentary...very succinct …
Thanks Bob...it appears that many on this board are doing what you suggest, or are considering it as relates to strategically drawing down IRAs before RMDs begin. I see magazines and articles continue to defer to the Taxable/IRA/Roth withdrawal sequ…
Bee...I too draw from an IRA, and started to do that two years ago when I was 59.5 for the same reasons you mentioned. I didn't know that calculator even existed, so that's a help. Doing my taxes this year is also informative, and will help me fine-…
Hi Bob,
In your column titled, "When should I start retirement plan withdrawals?", you mentioned that you were well in advance of RMD's, but weren't particularly precise as to when you should actually start retirement plan withdrawals other than pl…
If you believe the stock market follows trends, that's a very informative article.
Bear markets occur about twice each decade, and the longest gap between these occurring is 8 years. We're on year 6 since the last.
Trump announced that as soon as he's done bringing coal jobs back, he plans to get Fotomat workers back to developing film.
Buggywhips Amalgomated is awaiting further word.
When a local watering hole had run out of my usual and standard Macallan 12, they poured a Laphroaig. Now, I can't be sure it was the 10 year cask strength, but the characteristics would be similar.
It was way too peaty for me, with a medicinal bit…
I noticed that Pin Oak Equity (POGSX) shows up on several of these lists. If you wonder why it has just over $220M in assets, just pull a chart from the late 90's to today. I owned that, plus White Oak, after falling for the Oelschlager Oak Associat…
Here's a black swan which is very real....in about a month we face a government shut-down as a result of a showdown over the budget and the debt. I'm not sure where the cooler heads are which may prevent that.
Thank you bee. I did ask the adviser at Schwab (when I opened the IRA) if I could keep closed funds from my 401k and the answer I got back was no. Maybe I didn't ask the question correctly. But basically I transferred all 401k money to a sweep acoun…
Bee...the holdings were interesting, but perhaps equally interesting was the percentage the top holdings held in the portfolio...anywhere from 61% to the low single digits.
That's quite a variance in concentration.
I should also add it's not so much the size of your nest egg that counts in retirement as it is the amount of your expenses. No debt should be a given. I sure wish MFO had more retirement discussions
That sounds like an excellent suggestion. I sec…
I remain confused as to where her sweet spot may lie as compared to the Grandeur Peak and Seafarer portfolios. It might help if there were greater clarity from Ms. Geritz. I would think she would be amenable, if not eager for a conference call with …
@PRESSmUP- Just been there and done that. If you haven't yet purchased your new sink, we found this one to be very high quality 16 guage S/S (nothing like the crap at Home Depot or Lowes), and at a price that no one could match locally. We've used i…
VF...this saga is painful. But, as a frequent visitor to Vegas, I can tell you that there is no such thing as "house money".
Winnings beyond your original buy-in are not house money... it's YOUR money.
Deleted post. I am old, single, debt free, live in rural America, and have more than enough for future needs so my holdings (now down to just two) would have little value to anyone else.
Junkster....those of us who are old, single, debt free an…
