Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
@Sven, VGSH and SHY, which I track, look to be essentially identical. They could really do well if/when a recession looks imminent and short rates start fo fall.
Intermediate duration is doing pretty well recently ... in funds. And, @Sven, if you were responding to my older post, I think my language wasn't clear enough: I realize 5% in a 2y is not happening. The point is that under more normal circumstances,…
TNR: "Republicans also want work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. Adults without children must fulfill work requirements up to the age of 56, overturning current law that has the threshold at age 49. Not only …
There's a 17 week auction tomorrow, and the annualized yield today is about the same as the 3m with a slightly longer maturity, taking it out to August 29. I'm going that way, on the wild guess that even if the fit hits the shan in June/July, the ch…
Surprise? Not really: "Republicans’ opening bid to avert economic catastrophe by raising the nation’s borrowing limit focuses more on energy policy than reducing debt." For anyone who's awake, it should be a blow to McCarthy et al.'s credibility, pr…
@Sven: "Does anyone follow the debt ceiling debate?"
Yes, and I'm not very happy with the MSM "gotta compromise" framing of it -- normalizing hostage-taking behavior -- which is giving the hostage-takers oxygen, and probably making a sane resolutio…
I caught that the other day. If I remember correctly one of the justifications floating about was that he had them so everyone would never forget. Yeah, right.
His "collections" apparently aren't open to the public, so that rationale (IIRC, it was m…
@MikeM, you're right that FMIJX has been less volatile long term than either ARTYX or ARTKX, but keep in mind that all Artisan funds aren't alike. Some basic stats, ARTYX vs. ARTKX:
ARTYX: SD 27.7, Avg/Hi return:risk in category, negative alpha.
…
Good comment, @mrc70; FMIJX is a fairly reasonable alternative, if not as compelling. It is currency hedged. FMI at some point launched an essentially identical version of the fund that doesn't hedge currency (FMIFX), but its AUM is a tiny fraction …
Thanks, @Crash, had forgotten to look up this week's show. Interesting stuff -- noted especially the comment about duration ~ 5 as the sweet spot for adding duration per Bory. I'll have to do some figuring on that -- maybe a BND or BOND with a shot …
I own ARTKX and like the fund. You might want to look at Causeway International Value, CIVVX. There seems to be similarities between the two funds. Both are managed by a group of good folks. Both are large cap blend. I think CIVVX is more value lean…
March 31 edition. This isn't the same old-same old of the past couple of months; there's plenty of new discussion: extend duration or not, even if current longer duration yields don't look great right now, they likely will later; extent of tightenin…
I'm seeing a fair number of media reports and comments on same that assume that what the charges are is clear. But no, they won't be until the judge makes the terms of the indictment public on Tuesday.
Right, CDs are paying a bit more, but factoring in tax equivalency and risk, for me it's pretty much a coin toss. Not buying either at the moment. (4.9-5.0 seems to be the top of the range for shorter maturity Ts right now, at least until something …
I didn't realize he was still there; thought there was some scandal or something.
Yeah, the zone defense withered away after the 3 pt. shot came into the game. Some teams still use one of them strategically, though.
@MikeM, Creighton does have a good history in the tourney. Haven't seen them this year, but will today. They weren't in the top 25 in the last AP poll but had a decent NET ranking. O'course all that's out the window once the madness starts and it's …
Interesting to look at the bracket and realize that as of last night, before the games today, one of these three teams will be in the championship game: Florida Atlantic, San Diego St. or Creighton.
A shares of lots of funds come load-waived at brokerages. Fidelity has a big stable of them; seems like the LW ones there are mostly from larger fund companies. Don't know about Schwab, but might be worth checking.
The madness was on full display at Gonzaga-UCLA. What a game. What a last play call by Few. And Tyger came very close to making that last second half-court shot.
@Tarwheel, if M* is correct, that fund doles out income mainly once a year, in December, and it was an 8%+ distribution in Dec. 2022 (80c on a NAV of $9.07). The same table (on the Performance/Distribution page) shows how much the NAV fell over 2022.
As far as that TIPS fund, or any TIPS fund goes, the key thing to remember is that TIPS are Treasuries first, an inflation protection asset only second, and that that first principle is on steroids for longer durations.
The fund you reference, per…
Some potentially great games are coming up this Thurs. and Fri.: Alabama-San Diego State, UCLA-Gonzaga, Texas-Xavier, and probably Miami-Houston. And the others aren't bad either.
Not pulling for anybody in particular, just love two good teams play…
That Face the Nation interview was notable for Brennan the host shouting over Warren to keep her from saying anything about regulation. Then of course Brennan was all buddy-buddy with the Repubs on the program. Brennan and CBS sound more like Fox ev…
The bank officers certainly knew. Here's the head and subhead of an NYT article in today's edition. SVB was under Fed scrutiny, apparently just not very effective scrutiny:
Before Collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, the Fed Spotted Big Problems

@BenWP, dunno if there's either a distinction or a difference between trend following and momentum investing. M* calls the OEF category "systematic trend," and from the bit of studying them I've done it looks like they each have their own specific …
Most managed futures funds are trend followers; if there are any lasting trends (like earlier in 2022) they can work. If the assets they cover are bouncing around like mad, there's no way they can work.
Oversight and regulation matters. The 2018 change in the regulatory scheme (as detailed on Marketplace Morning Report today) was to move the bank exemption from oversight up from $5 billion or less valuation to $450 billion or less. No stress tests,…
