Stephen Hawking, Science's Brightest Star, Dies at 76

Some memorable quotes:
“For millions of years, mankind lived just like the animals. Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination. We learned to talk and we learned to listen. Speech has allowed the communication of ideas, enabling human beings to work together to build the impossible. Mankind’s greatest achievements have come about by talking, and its greatest failures by not talking. It doesn’t have to be like this. Our greatest hopes could become reality in the future. With the technology at our disposal, the possibilities are unbounded. All we need to do is make sure we keep talking.”
And he said this to his children:
“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up.”

  • I saw the news late last night. I'm damn sad about it. We must indeed mark this day!
  • Sad indeed. One of the best and the brightest.

  • What might have been -- what could have been -- what was --

How Hawking even lived as long as he did -- let alone what he achieved --
is a challenge of the highest order.

He could have died quite young -- as his diagnosis predicted -- and
lived a brief life without achievement -- as would have been
expected, given that prognosis. Yet he lived for another 50 years of
brilliant creative thought. He is unique not only for his inspired ideas
but for theoretical achievements that followed as a consequence.

But also, in our final homage to his genius, let us also remember the efforts
and sacrifices of those who at various times were also a part of his
life: those who supported and enriched his life on a daily basis --
often with substantial personal sacrifice, and made his life-work
    possible as well.
