The Great ETF Debacle Explained

Heading into the opening bell on Monday, Aug. 24, it was clear that U.S. stocks were going to see some heavy selling. The Standard & Poor’s 500 had ended the prior week on a four-day slide, and markets in Europe and Asia were plunging. What no one expected—and what many experts claimed couldn’t happen—was that prices for many of the largest exchange-traded funds fell far more sharply than the stocks they owned.

  • Boots and shovel time.
  • Is this really a problem for the long term (ie not a day trader) ETF investor?
  • It might bea problem for the long term investor who picks the wrong day (or time of day to sell) I want to know what to do as the only lesson I learned is don't buy or sell in the first or last 15 minutes. What lessons should I have learned?
  • They may need to bring back the specialists on the floor of the exchange. The amazing swoosh down--20%-30%-- of some big stocks (and the ETFs) was simply amazing. Investor confidence can will be lost if they don't fix this problem
