Hedge Funds Most Bearish on Crude in 4 Years After Rally
I don't know what the batting average of hedge funds is. If they think crude will correct downward in coming weeks, I tend to agree. But longer term, the bearish sentiment doesn't make sense to me.

Hedge fund performance has been more than dismal the past 6 years. So if you are long oil it's encouraging the know nothings are bearish on oil
"smart money" defines professional money managers. basically, if your mutual fund PM buys oil related stock for its mutual fund portfolio -- smart money did it; if you invest in this mutual fund - that's a retail flows. hedge funds are called "fast" money. except for some activists, and true fundamental credit guys, they move in and out of positions pretty rapidly.
all these definitions tell you nothing with regard to whose investment abilities have better results -- all just linguistic conventions.

The chart in the link above pretty much says it all. If 2009 were included it would be much worse.
Edit: Since this board is a cut above the rest (way above) I would think few if any here believe there is such a thing as the "smart money"
