2014 estimated (preliminary) year end distributions
Investors usually exit poorly performed funds. in order to raise cash for exiting investors, managers of the open end funds have to sell securities in a declining market. so they realize multi-year gains and sting the remaining investors with the cap gain taxes on top of the poor performance.
If your shares are still under water (e.g. if you bought them in the past year), you can sell them on the record date and buy them back on the ex-date.
You won't get to recognize your capital loss now (you'll have a wash sale, which will defer the loss), but you will avoid receiving the taxable distribution. This is a painless way of avoiding the paper gain while still staying invested (except for one day).
Realize that you'll be another one of those sellers dumping the cap gains on the remaining investors.
I looked at Matthews, too. They specify on their webpage that estimates will be posted in mid to latter part of November. 19th of the month, if I recall.
There are going to be some very, very large distributions this year by some funds. Surely it will have an impact on investors selling some of these holdings prior to the ex date. I know we are watching these very carefully, especially in light of some sectors' struggles this year.
Yes. I just identified a (small) holding of mine left over from 2004 where the NAV appreciation over the decade is so low and the projected distribution so high that selling now is basically a wash.
I get $N in cap gains by selling now, or $N in a combination of cap gains and ordinary income by holding. Obviously selling is better - same income, but 100% of it is long term cap gains.
Only problem in selling now is that I don't want to buy a dividend with the proceeds.
As someone else posted in this thread, it looks like small caps are likely candidates for a further sell off (making the actual dividends even worse that current projections).
Turner Funds (check out Emerging Growth, Small Cap Growth and Midcap Growth Funds...Ouch!!! The amounts to be paid out on these three funds increased as of 11/9/14 from original the estimates)
