The MFO website was down for several hours overnight, due to a lightening strike at the data center used by our hosting company. I believe that the facility is currently running on generator backup power, but I wouldn't be surprised if we experience some minor disruptions yet, as they get things sorted out.
in fact, the fact that this site is hosted by a company whose only concern is providing this service makes the operations more reliable and allows David to concentrate on content.
Most websites you visit these days are hosted somewhere where there is access to large bandwidth and server grade equipment that is upgraded along the way. Heck, they do have generators on site. What is the likelihood that you would have sufficient back up power and generators if you decide to host this site on your location. How long would it take to acquire parts or a new server had you hosted this on your own equipment and something fails? How about if your network was down how quickly get that fixed let a lot switch to backup/alternate path to Internet. And you are doing all that on a low budget like David?
Few people have the resources to establish data centers like Google, Apple, Yahoo, Microsoft, Amazon etc. even big companies that do have IT guys and systems for internal network choose to host their external web somewhere else.
Come on Ted. You do have to rely on other people at some point for services.

You're going to locate a better, more reliable system host; and/or provide the hosting service, eh? Cool !!! and thanks.
I don't think that is a fair criticism.
