Pro-Trump attorneys push EO that would give Trump wide power over elections: Sources

With the Republicans likely to lose the House, this is just the beginning.
A group of pro-Trump attorneys and supporters is circulating a draft of a presidential executive order that uses alleged Chinese interference in the 2020 election -- of which there is no evidence -- to justify a national emergency declaration that they claim would give President Donald Trump sweeping power over voting, multiple sources told ABC News.

The 17-page draft order, which sources say Trump has reviewed, would mandate the use of voter ID and hand-counted ballots, and ban mail-in ballots ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

The attorneys pushing the draft order said they anticipate it would be incorporated into a planned executive order, which they expect to be issued soon

  • Current term presidential Executive Orders need to be contested (in courts) more often. Especially this one.

An executive order (EO) is a written directive from the U.S. President that manages federal government operations, with the force of law but requiring no congressional approval to take effect, though they must stem from the President's constitutional or statutory authority and can be challenged in court or overturned by future presidents or Congress.
  • More often? I'd say almost every single one.

Article I, Section 4, Clause I of the U.S. Constitution leaves most election decisions up to the states:

"The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives,
    shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof;
but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations,
except as to the Places of chusing Senators."

Republicans know that they are not popular with the overall voter population and therefore need
to disenfranchise large swaths of voters in order to stand a chance in the mid-term elections.
If Trump issues this EO, it will be contested and struck down.
  • After we get this clown out of office, many of the Laws and Regulations will need to be "altered".

Especially the ones involving limitations on the US President's powers. Although the GOP majority Congress should shoulder much of the blame. Have to remember that come November.

From Heather Cox Richardson from March 9, 2026.

"Trump has become so desperate to force Republicans in Congress to limit voting before the 2026 midterms
that yesterday morning he took to social media to threaten them. He said that unless the Senate weakens
the filibuster to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act over the objections of
Democrats, 'I, as President, will not sign other Bills until this is passed, AND NOT THE WATERED DOWN
VERSION—GO FOR THE GOLD: MUST SHOW VOTER I.D. & PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP: NO MAIL-IN
BALLOTS EXCEPT FOR MILITARY—ILLNESS, DISABILITY, TRAVEL: NO MEN IN WOMEN’S SPORTS:
NO TRANSGENDER MUTILATION FOR CHILDREN! DO NOT FAIL!!!'"

"Senate majority leader John Thune (R-SC) does not have the votes even to make up a majority in favor
of the act, let alone the 60 he would need to overcome a filibuster, and has said he will not change the
filibuster to try to pass the measure."

Comments: Trump's approval ratings are very low. The party in power normally loses Congressional seats
in mid-term elections. These losses will be exacerbated by Trump's many reckless actions since being reelected.
When Trump can't win "fair and square", history has shown this scoundrel will lie, cheat, and violate laws
in a desperate attempt to hold on to power.

Senator John Cornyn of Texas reversed himself and now supports changing the Senate's filibuster rule.
It's important to note Sen. Cornyn needs Donald J. Trump's endorsement in a tough primary runoff.
Mr. Trump seeks to "reform" the filibuster rule in order to pass the SAVE America Act.
Cornyn told the WSJ in October that eliminating the filibuster was an “absolute nonstarter”
because it would “destroy the Senate.”
Let's hope that Sen. Cornyn will be an “absolute nonstarter” after the mid-term elections.
He was first elected to the Senate in 2002—he had a very long run, but it's now time to go!
  • I've not read that Paxton has withdrawn. I giggled at the TRUTH of it, to read that "he's been plagued by corruption trouble since he was in nursery school." Paxton is filth. Any alternative that is not Repugnant would be better. But (sigh) that's not gonna happen...
  • Due to Paxton's horrible corruption I would expect he'll get the endorsement.
  • I am not as confident about the midterms as many seem to be. Yes, the majority is down on Trump BUT are they more down on liberals/woke/green/etc. The rhetoric might be able to win the day no matter how down the polls are.

  • correct. gop voters will never get smarter\logical\rational. every foreign nation has accepted that.
likewise, dont expect the dems to increase their skills in transforming any irrelevant\minor issue into broad voter entertainment. (voter fraud, violent immigrants...)
[the epstein issue has its own momentum]

although the dems have a few great newcomers (turek, vindman), the most i hope for is the usual gop (and rightwing independents) disinterest in midterms...where the trump name is not on display.
but look for the inevitable trump mention in every political ad, more than ever.
  • I keep hoping against hope. But the bottom line is simply this: too many US voters are simply ignorant. Easily persuaded, not able to think critically. Ready to believe Fake (Fox) "News." For example, this is what I hear around me, often: "Republicans are supposed to be good with money, and I want some of that, so I'll vote Republican."

    .....Um.... What???!!!!! Huh?????!!!!!

    I kid you NOT.
  • Haven't heard that one since I was a kid. My god.
