all wibbly-wobbly

Hi, guys.

The board (but not the main site) crashed again overnight. We're up (obviously) and working on stabilization. In the short term, something has sucked down all our disk space and Chip is (even as I type) hunting for deletable files ... AW Stats created a huge 18 GB temp file when the site crashed and the temp creates another crash (sigh), logs, backups, that sort of thing. It's a patch. In the longer term, the challenge is that the board runs on Vanilla, which is dead and abandoned software. The last update was 2018. There's a private company running what appears to be an expensive, roach-motel version of the software: you can migrate into it, but you lose the ability to ever regain your independence (with a five-figure annual fee). So the possibility we're looking at is new software (Flarum? Discourse?) that will be similar to Vanilla but, frankly, not Vanilla. It's possible to try migrating from Vanilla ca 2014 to Vanilla ca 2018 ... maybe. That's the weekend project. Chip thinks she's stabilized things for now, though.

If you see anything wonky, please send an email to both of us (David@ ... Chip@ ...). We'll both be at work so we won't have direct experience with the board but we'll see your alarms.

Just wanted to let you know.

David
