Trump administration releases funds for New York-New Jersey tunnel project

Following are excerpts from a current report in The Guardian:

Money clears path for work on Gateway project increasing number of tunnels linking New York City and New Jersey
The Trump administration transferred the balance of federal funds it owed to the Gateway rail tunnel initiative on Wednesday, along with additional money beyond the original amount, clearing the path for work on the project to restart as early as next week. Once finished, the project will increase the number of rail tunnels linking New York City and New Jersey, as well as repair a century-old tunnel that was heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, which is used by more than 200,000 travelers and 425 trains daily.

The New York governor, Kathy Hochul, announced on social media that the administration delivered the final installment tied to the $16bn cross-Hudson project connecting the cities: “Following our preliminary court victory and my conversation with the president, the Trump administration has released the remaining $127 million in overdue Gateway tunnel funding,” Hochul wrote. “Construction resumes next week. A major win for workers and commuters.”

The move follows a ruling last week from a federal judge requiring Trump and the transportation secretary, Sean Duffy, to restore the suspended funding. The Trump administration is expected to challenge that ruling. The president has withheld $205m in reimbursements for the project since the start of October. Trump reportedly demanded that Washington Dulles international airport and New York’s Penn Station be renamed for him in exchange for unfreezing the funds, drawing strong criticism from Democrats. Financial support for the effort had run out on 6 February, forcing construction to stop.

Last year, Trump had declared the Gateway project “terminated”. In his post on Truth Social on Monday, he doubled down on his opposition to the project, though he did not specify whether the federal funds would remain frozen. “I am opposed to the future boondoggle known as ‘Gateway,’ in New York/New Jersey, because it will cost many BILLIONS OF DOLLARS more than projected or anticipated,” Trump wrote. “Gateway will likewise be financially catastrophic for the region, unless hard work and proper planning is done, NOW, to avoid insurmountable future cost overruns.”

Either that or Penn Station doesn't matter to him anymore since he's probably getting Palm Beach Airport named after him soon...

Any way you look at it, he lost in court and had to cough up the funds. The rest is just a typical rant. We can all agree that he definitely is an expert on cost overruns. And absolutely knows how badly things can deteriorate, due to lack of real work and proper planning. Just look at his casino ventures. That covers the whole gamut.

How comical that this guy attempted to hold back approved funding (essentially money he had no control over) in a demand that things be named after him. The level of insecurity and pettiness is astronomical. Off the charts.

But he's trying to halt the Michigan to Windsor bridge.

    What's the difference? tunnel ... bridge ?
  • That is no doubt a different flavor of petty. Canada hasn't folded like a cheap tent, when assaulted economically and verbally. So, in the usual fashion, he harms everyone involved in some project.

Often something that he has no authority or connection to. This being strictly a matter between MI and Canada. He trots out the misinformation. Threatens. Blusters. It is a stark admission that his "art of the deal" is failing miserably. That his approach and plan are not working. So, he flails out of his own impotence.

What exactly is he going to do to stop the opening? Post tanks on the MI side?

Invade a northern border state starting with "M"? That's so 2025. Post tanks on the Canadian side. Now that's more like 2026!
  • Ironically, that bridge was envisioned to enable trade. "No trade for you!" says the trade nazi.
  • The bridge was halted a few hours after the owner of the current bridge Matthew Moran ( donated $1,000,000 to Trump's PAC last month) and then sat down with Commerce Secretary Lutnick.

Anybody who claims Trump is a Mob boss is full of it. A real Mob Boss would have demanded far more than $1,000,000 from a mark that makes $300,000,000 a year from the bridge

  • yep, below is the full gop perp gallery.
looks like lutnick is now feeling 'trump-innoculated epstein immunity' and going full grift.
