Treasury Direct 1099s

edited January 28 in Other Investing
They aren't mailed, so find them at Treasury Direct.

Edit/Add. If you have only Savings Bonds, no need to login unless you sold something - there are no 1099s for Savings Bonds.

  • Thank you. That is very helpful for future selling of I bonds.
  • Also, if you have converted (from paper) bonds and electronic bonds, there are two separate 1099s. You have to look under each account for them.
  • You do not get a 1099 for I bonds either unless you sell, correct?
  • @sma3, correct, no annual 1099 for EE-Bonds or I-Bonds.
  • Thanks for confirmation!
  • Almost correct. At maturity (or final maturity for EE bonds), the Treasury redeems savings bonds whether you sell them or not.

  • "When EE and I Bonds reach maturity, they are automatically redeemed and the interest earned is reported for federal income tax purposes."
  • Some EE bonds reach maturity after 17 or 20 years. They reach final maturity after 30 years. Only then are they automatically redeemed. Yes, it's confusing and much of what's written, even on the Treasury site, doesn't get it quite right.

Not all that different from Social Security talking about "full" retirement age, which is different from when you max out.
These EE bonds have 2 maturity dates
EE bonds that we issued from May 1997 through April 2005 have an original maturity date part way into the bond's 30-year life, as well as a final maturity date at the end of the bond's 30-year life.
Issue date of EE bond Original maturity date
    May 1, 1997 through May 1, 2003 17 years from issue date
    June 1, 2003 through April 1, 2005 20 years from issue date
