msf, thx, but too complex for me. i may break my rule for dealing with these disliked banks and get 1 new card. amex most likely to dump...had since college!
For regular use, I have Amex Platinum (main), Sapphire Preferred*, and Amazon (for Amazon only.) In the sock drawer is the United Gateway card (to keep points active) and a Visa from my credit union. For me, I think worrying about which-card-to-use-where for each purchase is a waste of energy/attention.
* which I mainly got earlier this year b/c the 100K point bonus was too good to ignore
