Uncle Trumpy claims the Canadian-sponsored ad was "FAKE." The Reagan Foundation said the editing was unauthorized and misrepresented Ronny's message. No way.
The use of Reagan's radio message really irked President Trump! The party that once trumpeted free-market capitalism (with all its warts) marches towards "state capitalism."
"US President Donald Trump halted all trade negotiations with Canada earlier this week over an advert in which former President Ronald Reagan says tariffs 'hurt every American'".
"The ad, sponsored by Canada's province of Ontario and released last week, features excerpts of an address Reagan gave in 1987 focusing on foreign trade."
"Trump called the advert 'FAKE' while The Ronald Reagan Foundation said it 'misrepresents' the former president's address. Ontario later said it would stop running it so trade talks could resume."
"While the minute-long advert only includes excerpts from the original, five-minute-long address, it does not alter Reagan's words. It does however alter the order in which he made the comments."
President Reagan was a free market capitalist. The issue over the advertisement is that he had just placed tariffs on Japan and Japan alone, which was left out of the advertisement. There is a difference in placing tariffs on one country versus most of the rest of the world. I believe if Mr. Reagan were here today, he would disagree with the tariffs today.
"The 1987 radio speech - Address to the Nation on Free and Fair Trade - begins with Reagan saying Japan's prime minister will visit the White House and "recent disagreements" on trade will be discussed. Reagan had recently placed tariffs on some Japanese goods over a trade agreement dispute."
as stated by Canadians, despite this being a time-limited ad from a single province, the core truth hurts. trump is a useless snowflake playing with the world's largest economy only for his personal grift and ego.
although i have no doubt matching carney's background and intellect versus trump, i hope tens of millions of canadians keep chipping away with grassroot american boycotts. they can do fine w/out them, and actions will speak louder than another 3 years of dementia.
I might have to root for the American League this year.
LOL same here.
On the upside, if Toronto wins, that'll probably be the one group of professional sports WINNERS that Tariff Toddler won't invite to the White House for a photo op.
Certain parallels with the Japan situation back then, and China now. In both cases, we were frightened by any entity that might share the spoils of success.
Reagan, like trump, raised taxes significantly. And increased our national debt substantially. Reagan more than tripled out debt in his 8 years. Tripled!
In what context (or order) are these quotes NOT averse to tariffs?
"When someone says, 'let's impose tariffs on foreign imports', it looks like they're doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. And sometimes, for a short while it works, but only for a short time."
"Over the long run, such trade barriers hurt every American, worker and consumer."
"High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars."
The only real difference with these words, was that Reagan was using tariffs in direct response to a specific trade violation, against a single country and limited products. Which means his words are even MORE relevant to the trump tariffs.
trump wants to be the only one who gets his message out there. he absolutely does not believe in free speech. He wants unilateral speech - only his.
And just threw another 10% tariff on Canadian goods this evening, because his feelings got hurt.
Internet feedback has been amusingly honest:
Erica York: "Is the new 10% tariff on imports from Canada related to the fentanyl emergency or the reciprocal trade emergency or are hurt feelings also now a national emergency?"
MeidasTouch: "Trump says he’s increasing tariffs on imports of Canadian goods by 10% because Ontario’s commercial that accurately used Ronald Reagan’s words about tariffs made him sad."
