Govt. shutdown / Partial funding bill blocked / Is it safe to plan air travel?

edited October 23 in Off-Topic
This is getting ridiculous. The govt. has been “closed” for two weeks - maybe longer. Air Traffic Controllers are about to have a “payless payday”. Yet, most continue to show up for work. The Prez tried do get a partial funding bill passed that would have allowed ATC workers to get paid. And earlier he decreed that military personnel would get paid. One hell of a way to run a government. Grossly unfair to dedicated public servants. As one who enjoys air travel and is considering booking trips to FLA / NYC etc. I’m having second thoughts. If I was an unpaid TSA or ATC worker I wouldn’t show up for work. But that would inconvenience millions of flyers through no fault of their own. Getting stranded half way home is no picnic. (Note: The govt. plans to grant back pay to the workers Trump didn’t fire. We’ll see how that goes.)

What do you think? Would you book air travel for a couple weeks out?

  • Nope, and especially not into DC

This is how things normally work during government shutdowns.
Earlier this month, Trump warned that certain government employees may not receive back pay.

"The shutdown has raised fears about staffing shortages in a job that requires long, intense hours
and sophisticated training. But concerns about air travel could also help drive Republicans and Democrats
to find a way out of the funding impasse, now into its fourth week.
Absenteeism and air-travel problems played a central role in bringing about the end
of the most recent shutdown, a record monthlong lapse that stretched from 2018 to 2019."

"Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who joined Johnson at his news conference, warned that the strain
on the aviation system would hit travelers. 'I can’t guarantee that your flight is going to be on time,'
[emphasis added] he said. 'I can’t guarantee you that your flight’s not gonna be canceled'
    [emphasis added].”

"In the GOP-controlled Senate, Republicans failed to advance a measure Thursday,
sponsored by Sen. Ron Johnson (R., Wis.), that would pay all federal workers who are deemed essential
by the administration and required to work during a shutdown, including air-traffic controllers.
The vote was 54 in favor to 45 against, short of the 60 votes needed.
Democratic Sens. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania and Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock of Georgia
    sided with Republicans."
