China issues update after Trump reveals trade deal

Very little details were released no both sides, and that is concerning…
Matthew Axelrod, former head of export enforcement at the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security, now a partner at Gibson Dunn, said: "Today's announcement has both upside and downside. It's positive that the Chinese have agreed to relax their restrictions on rare-earth minerals, but the fact that the U.S. government used export controls—which are key to U.S. national security interests—to strike this deal sets a concerning precedent."

  • The mere fact that it isn't being touted as the biggest and best ever, might be telling us a lot. Add in the fact that we are apparently relaxing export controls, when Trump's base considers China an existential threat, is a strong indication that China holds the winning hand here. I expect a great deal of spin to portray this is a lop-sided win, even. And any tough questions to be labelled as "nasty".

It is starting to look like Trump opened the Pandora box with China, blithely unaware of our Rare Earth dependency, and ended up selling out our national security concerns along the way.
  • Combing a stable genius and a team of inexperienced trade team is not good. What does China want in exchange and there is where the risk is?
