Tesla -- scratching my head - is it just me?

edited April 23 in Off-Topic
I read Tesla profits were down 71% yet price is now up almost 5%. I get that supposedly there is more to TSLA than cars but 5%? PE 137 while most car company's are low single or double digits.

I know Musk is stepping away from DOGE a little but do they think everybody thinks... Oh Musk isn't screwing up the government as much, I'm going out today to buy a Tesla! The damage is done, until he leaves Tesla their cars might as well be garbage IMHO.

  • It's not just you. The brand is tarnished, and Musk is not going to be able to change that.

This brings to mind David Brooks' comments on the PBS News Hour during the first Trump administration.
Mr. Brooks stated (paraphrasing) that Trump diminishes everyone who comes into close contact with him.

A 5% daily gain is nothing for most stocks. It happens. The algos may be buying or maybe some orchestrated meme mob like we’ve seen in Hertz & GameStop in the past. When you see 25%+ gains in a day that’s noteworthy.

I did briefly consider buying some TSLA stock 1 or 2 days ago. Suspected it had reached a near-term bottom. But longer term … who knows? It’s a tough equation. Nice cars. Advanced tech. But the stock must still have a sky high PE. What doesn’t get talked about much is that the Chinese have leap-frogged ahead of Tesla in the electronics - including battery tech. Their cars are much cheaper and outselling Tesla in other parts of the world like Europe.

    Good question @gman57.
  • TSLA peaked in December 2024 & many people sold it then. Even banks got out of lot of TSLA debt that they were stuck with.
The loss was bad but was expected. It's just a wiggle in the chart.

  • There is nothing unique about Tesla. EV world has evolved, and there are better players out there. The extreme high valuation and Musk personality are real turn-off.
