He still has a 47% overall approval rating somehow

https://www.northjersey.com/story/news/2025/04/17/what-is-trump-approval-rating-today-what-polls-say-now-president-trumps-current-job-approval-rating/83136363007/

Bold added....

RealClear Polling which encompasses 12 different pollsters, including those mentioned above, shows Trump's overall favorability dropping to 46.9% versus 50.3% that disapprove, as of today.

Amid last week's tariff turmoil, the Quinnipiac University Poll shows 72% of voters think tariffs will hurt the U.S. economy in the short-term while only 53% think the tariffs will hurt in the long-run and 41% think it will help the economy in the long-run. It showed that voters are very split when it comes to how they view which political party cares more about their needs and problems, with 33% saying the Democratic Party, 33% saying the Republican Party, and 31% saying neither party. Note: among independents, 46% said neither party cares, 27% said the Democratic Party cared and 25% said the Republican party cared more.

  • I wonder if that 47% figure just reflects his core constituency which will be hard to budge.
  • That’s the core of our nation’s crisis. If 47% of our fellow citizens approve of what’s happening then all is lost.

No matter what, if that's correct, then, yes: we are screwed.

I find it incomprehensible that Trump still has a 47% favorability rating after
his irrationality, incompetence, and disregard for the law were fully displayed.
If this rating represents 47% of the overall population, I concur with Crash: "we are screwed."

While Congress has been abdicating power to the executive branch over many decades (unwisely in my view), the current situation also points to a known flaw in our system of democratic governance with the general populace electing the chief executive rather than he / she being appointed by and serving at the leisure of a legislative body as in Canada, England and most Western European countries. Others I’m sure (more knowledgeable than I) have debated the pros and cons of the two different types of democracies. But what we’re seeing was pretty much prophesied by my 8th grade civics teacher more than 60 years ago - so I can’t believe it’s unheard of or completely unexpected.

I’m not oblivious to the role of Congress in this. Trump’s appeal to the masses in red states (with help from monied interests) allows him to more / less keep the sheep confined

In the end, popular opinion should win out. (Whether the opinion is based on facts or distorted / dishonest representation of such is a different matter.) Nixon left office with just 24% public approval - but that was after a lengthy pre-impeachment hearing that exposed the depravity of his methods and those of his subservients. No leader can expect to retain power with such dismal ratings.

  • TV commentator just report that 47% rating was higher than his first term!
  • Donald Trump approval rating: Would Trump beat Harris in election do-over? What voters said

In a CNN poll this week, data analyst Harry Enten asked Trump voters if they’d vote differently in a do-over.

“I’m here to tell you, very few of them regret what they did back in 2024.” His polling results showed that only 2% said they would change their vote while only 1% said they wouldn't have voted at all.

When Kamala Harris voters were asked the same question, the poll numbers came back very similar. “The bottom line is for all this talk of Trump voters regretting their vote, in the numbers, it really just doesn’t show up.”
