New GLP-1 Obesity Drugs are Stressing Wedding Gown Industry

It's easy to see how these new drugs are hurting junk snack foods, some medical devices and even some surgical procedures. But wedding gowns?

Well, wedding gowns are produced by a cottage industry that got decimated by the pandemic. The business is rebounding, but there are new headaches.

Wedding gowns must now be ordered 8-12 months ahead of the wedding day. Only the measurements and orders are done locally, and then the gowns are made overseas, often in China. So, think of global supply-chain issues. The local firm usually covers fitting adjustments for free.

But making adjustments for 5-10-pound weight variations is one thing, taking care of 50+ pound weight loss from the new GLP-1 drugs is something else. That is causing countless hours of free adjustment work for an industry already under stress. Of course, the local firms may start charging for large scale alterations, but that may take time.

So, the next time you hear that the new obesity drugs are causing some local wedding gown firms to quit, remember that you read this here 8-) .
