As a member of the Alaska Airlines million mile club I am opposed to this merger. Hawaiian Airlines has lost money in 14 of the last 15 quarters. When Alaska bought Virgin they were stuck with a bunch of crummy Airbus planes that were non compatible with their Boeing fleet. It took about 3 years to fix. Why not let them fail?
I've been watching-tracking ALK since the 1980s. I was in WA State at the time, where they are HQ'd. I'm glad I never bought any airline shares--- for the very reason quoted by @rforno, above.
ALK has always delivered for me. Can't complain, though I've used them rarely. They do seem to be quite a well-run operation. Their reach will extend now even to Australia and NZ. That must have had something to do with the transaction. I figure they could see they'd never knock off SWA and Delta and American from being Kings of the Hill, on the Mainland. And they will pick-up all the inter-island flights Hawaiian has here in the State. SWA is growing and expanding flights inter-island and also flights to here from the Mainland. But Hawaiian is supreme with regard to coverage here, inter-island. There are some local players, but I can tell you that one of them does not even bother with flights to Kauai!
It's really something to think about: anyone who needs a particular specialist or surgery will need to fly to Honolulu on Oahu, anyway. (Some stuff can be done on the other islands, sure. ) ...... A State full of islands, but with no ferries, apart from morning and evening, between Maui and Lanai--- the island owned by Larry Ellison. There continues to be a small village on Lanai, too.
