A private conversation is like an email. If you click on another member's name you'll go to their profile page. On the left, there should be a link to send them a message. That's the beginning of a private conversation.
When they reply to you, if you've selected "Notify me when i'm added to . . ." a notification will be sent to your regular email address, so that you know to check the conversation here. You can add extra people to a private conversation at any time, by including more names in the "To" section of the message.
