On the other hand, in chess the end game is not the end of the game, but the final stages of a game. I would say that Boehner et al. are in the end game, and the question is how to play that out. The end game itself is not the objective.
A side note on shut - some people refer to turning off a light as shutting the light. One can see a certain logic in this, though I always found it backward, as turning off a light means opening a circuit. Closing the circuit turns the light on. Something we could use a little more of in DC. (Not to be confused with direct current.)
