On the seventieth anniversary of NORAD’s tracking of Santa, Liza Donnelly and Heather Cox Richardson take a look at how everyday people transformed the process of educating Americans about Cold War defense systems into holiday magic.
Norad Santa wasn't Doge'd? Been following it with my son for decades. Always a source of Xmas spirit. I seem to recall them having a landline phone number at one time.
Each Christmas Eve, a hangar on the NORAD base is transformed into a call center. There are approximately one thousand volunteers who rotate through the call center over the course of the day. More than 380,000 calls from around the world came in last year.
"On Dec. 24, trackers worldwide can call 1-877-HI-NORAD (1-877-446-6723) to ask our live operators about Santa’s location from 4 a.m. to midnight MST. Additionally, we are introducing a web-based calling option so children without the means to reach NORAD via phone number can call the NORAD Tracks Santa Operations Center directly from our noradsanta.org website. Virtual translation services will also be able to support more than 200 languages via our call center."
