Globalization Did Not Hollow Out The American Middle Class

Comments

  • Well now... there's certainly a lot to think about and chew over in that report.
  • The article is kinda lengthy :)

“Go to college” turns out to have been good advice. The boom jobs of the new era are in things like management, STEM, education, and health care
  • On the other hand, there's a report in this morning's WSJ saying that High School Juniors learning welding are being offered $70k starting pay (!!) when they graduate. Seems like some trades are in serious demand, and unlikely to be replaced by AI.

This is actually an excellent example of how well the American middle class is doing which is one of the key takeaways from this article.

I knew I chose the wrong profession!
  • When still active, working in a County seat town in West Virginia, I was solicited for input about a New and Improved initiative regarding the direction and focus of curricula in the Community College system in the State.

I had no arguments with what was sent to me. But in response, I added a note. I emphasized that education ought not be solely about jobs and money and financial security and higher and higher salaries. What was missing from the proposed Program was any mention of the task of examining Life's deep questions about Meaning and Ethics, Integrity and the Common Good.

A response came. It was gratifying. The Head Guy told me he would include my input. A nice, rare win, toiling away in a profession which by definition is counter-cultural. :)
