    Lightfoot’s lyrics are powerful and often depressing, The one that begins “The space shuttle ends where the subway begins … “ is indeed haunting. (A shuttle crew returns to earth to find the human race has completely annihilated itself … “There’s a tear on the face of the moon.”)

    Great musician. Saw him twice only in person: 1972 and ~ 2008 or thereabouts, after his (first?) huge health crisis. Poor guy was physically a shadow of his former self, but still had enough of his voice quality and range for the concert to be memorable.

    It was such a reflection of our northern neighbors' sensibilities that he was commissioned by the CBC to write their centennial ballad.
